Trump's new stance on Syria

For those who haven't heard:
https://twitter.com/ABC/status/850061827677368320

Tillerson on Assad: "Clearly with the acts that he has taken it would seem there would be no role for him to govern the Syrian people."

Quite frankly this gets me worried. It's a 180 degrees turn and return to the latest disastrous foreign policy of the last 20-25 years.
One of the very positive things of Trump's approach was no more pointless wars, yet we are very close to that again. Total letdown.

I'm from Europe and I'm starting to think that American warmogering is too much of a burden for us to share. An involvement in Syria risks escalating in a military conflict against Russia and possibly nuclear warfare.
Of course, Neocon masterminds like McCain and Graham are cheerleading this. I want out of NATO asap.

What's your take guys? Ready to embark in another Middle East adventure to remove big bad dictator? Preparing your nuclear refuge?

Buddy, 10000% with you man. Spot on.

This is so obviously a false flag. Assad has basically won the war. Why would he use sarin gas on this tiny town at this stage in the game. The previous "gas" attack that Obama was using as a reason to go to war was essentially disproven. Now this.

Frankly, it makes me sick. Assad is no saint, but to act all aghast at these 70 innocent deaths when the USA killed 100 in Mosul a week ago is the height of hypocrisy.

If we push for regime change I will 100% shit all over Trump. Personally, I think this is Kushner pushing for this and being aided by the McCain's of the world. The USA has basically become a force for bad in the last 30 years. The refuge crisis causing mayhem in Europe is directly linked to our actions in Libya and the rest of the ME. Illegally invading Iraq gave birth to ISIS.

I am fine with an impartial investigation. I am also fine with requiring Assad to destroy any chemical weapons he still has, but regime change is unacceptable.

The amount of money we waste fighting these wars is just so pointless. I think Trump is seeing first hand the gravitational forces that the parasitic elected officials in DC exert.

EDIT

You just have to love the automatic presumption of guilt. You have numerous rebel groups operating within Syria. You have a previous debunked chemical attack. This chemical attack defies all logic and would be the dumbest thing a rather astute leader could do, at a point in a civil war where the government has a decide advantage. Yet we just assume Assad ordered this. Pathetic. Our decline as the sole superpower cannot come fast enough. A little geopolitical humbling is much in order.

http://web.archive.org/web/20130130091742/http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne…

Syria is in the middle of a civil war, fighting ISIS, along with other rebel groups. We are not sure whether his forces used gas, if rebels used it, or if stockpiles were hit and the gas was inadvertently released. Furthermore, I love how one form of killing people is bad, but others are ok. Like how we "accidentally" kill civilians all the time.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/03/22/u_s_airstrike_reporte…

Furthermore, what business is it of the USA what Assad does. Suppose he did use chemical weapons on separatist groups. Does that make the USA the judge, jury and executioner? And why is it our missiles, costing us money, that has to do this.

Sorry, but I am done with giving a fuck about anything but the USA. We should not be the global police. We should not be firing missiles into a country wantonly. We have no right. We wonder why we are universally hated in the ME, yet continue with this shit. This is McCain bullshit right here.

Middle-East, NF. If you're a middle easterner at a school with top tier Greek Life (SEC schools are the BBs of college frat life) then you can't get into a southern Old Row frat. At most middle-easterners can get into a lower-middle tier frat because the god tier frats are all protestant only. For this reason I believe that everyone in Syria is lower-middle tier at best, and because of that it is okay to bomb the entire country back to the stone age

Absolutely sickening. I wake up to this shit. I honestly really have so little pride in being an American nowadays. The level of condemnation and military drumbeating was simply so convenient. I hope this stops at just some missiles and we don't push for regime change.

"In September 2015 a US official stated that ISIS was manufacturing and using mustard agent in Syria and Iraq, and had an active chemical weapons research team. In February 2016, the CIA Director John O. Brennan said on 60 Minutes that there was "a number of instances where ISIL has used chemical munitions on the battlefield"

Fucking Trump. Idiot is letting himself get suckered into the same shit by the same morons. Washington is truly a cesspool.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2017/03/25/u-s-milita…

I am waiting on a nation to launch cruise missiles at the largest killer of civilians, the USA.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-04-06/ron-paul-zero-chance-assad-beh…

I mean it is so blatant. We don't even wait for an investigation. I am sure Bannon is putting a hole into a wall somewhere in the west wing.

Good work in handing off your own ability to look at things and think critically. And as Americans, we have every right to question the actions of our leaders.

But how about this. Lets just say, for the sake of argument, that Assad did gas his people. I mean Assad has been bombing his people, that we all know. And death = death. But I guess in the land of the free, dying by gas is magically worse than a bomb. But I digress.

Assad gassed his people. OK. And how is that a security threat to the US? How had that killed one American? Impacted one grain of US soil? Are there not countless regimes, killing countless people across the globe this very instant? Did the USA not just kill 100 (or 200 people) last week?

We just pissed away $15MM for zero benefit. Thats what, 150 college scholarships at a good private school for inner city kids. Where is NATO chipping in? Or the other Arab nations?

I don't even know the details of NATO's finances or the country contribution mix. But I do think US makes up a huge chunk of that where countries like Germany, that can chip in much more don't. All I really care about is the US standing up as a leader, because we are the greatest country on this planet and in history. I rather have a true American world than anyone out there.

The gas issue has nothing do with magic. Invoking this terminology is not only a falsehood, but it's a farce to civil statehood and progressive democratic ideals. It's against Geneva conventions that dates back to post-WWI and is made to prevent a nuclear breakout since 1980. Not understanding the depth of broken morality here is like blasphemy to the Pope.

TNA thought he was so frat and tight when he voted for Donald Trump, who vowed to bomb the shit out of the middle-east, but now he is surprised that Trump....bombed the shit out of the middle-east. Dude must have been in a bottom-tier.

Here is some good backstory I found.

Bush Administration Probes Syria's Future With Assad's Opposition

Saturday, March 26, 2005

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A2028-2005Mar25.html

The Bush administration is reaching out to the Syrian opposition because of growing concerns that unrest in Lebanon could spill over and suddenly destabilize Syria, which borders four countries pivotal to U.S. Middle East policy -- Israel, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey, U.S. and Syrian sources said.

U.S. officials, however, yesterday denied that the meeting was intended to coordinate efforts to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad's government.

"That would be a monumental distortion," a senior State Department official said. "But it was a discussion about supporting reform and change in the region and specifically Syria -- and how we can help that and work with people in the region and Syria to support that process."

Syria in Bush's Cross Hairs

Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006

http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1571751,00.html

The Bush Administration has been quietly nurturing individuals and parties opposed to the Syrian government in an effort to undermine the regime of President Bashar Assad. Parts of the scheme are outlined in a classified, two-page document that says that the U.S. already is "supporting regular meetings of internal and diaspora Syrian activists" in Europe. The document bluntly expresses the hope that "these meetings will facilitate a more coherent strategy and plan of actions for all anti-Assad activists."

U.S. secretly backed Syrian opposition groups, cables released by WikiLeaks show

April 17, 2011

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/us-secretly-backed-syrian-oppositi…

The State Department has secretly financed Syrian political opposition groups and related projects, including a satellite TV channel that beams anti-government programming into the country, according to previously undisclosed diplomatic cables.

The London-based satellite channel, Barada TV, began broadcasting in April 2009 but has ramped up operations to cover the mass protests in Syria as part of a long-standing campaign to overthrow the country’s autocratic leader, Bashar al-Assad. Human rights groups say scores of people have been killed by Assad’s security forces since the demonstrations began March 18; Syria has blamed the violence on “armed gangs.”

Barada TV is closely affiliated with the Movement for Justice and Development, a London-based network of Syrian exiles. Classified U.S. diplomatic cables show that the State Department has funneled as much as $6 million to the group since 2006 to operate the satellite channel and finance other activities inside Syria. The channel is named after the Barada River, which courses through the heart of Damascus, the Syrian capital.

The U.S. money for Syrian opposition figures began flowing under President George W. Bush after he effectively froze political ties with Damascus in 2005. The financial backing has continued under President Obama, even as his administration sought to rebuild relations with Assad. In January, the White House posted an ambassador to Damascus for the first time in six years.

C.I.A. Said to Aid in Steering Arms to Syrian Opposition

JUNE 21, 2012

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/world/middleeast/cia-said-to-aid-in-s…

A small number of C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey, helping allies decide which Syrian opposition fighters across the border will receive arms to fight the Syrian government, according to American officials and Arab intelligence officers.

The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the officials said.

The C.I.A. officers have been in southern Turkey for several weeks, in part to help keep weapons out of the hands of fighters allied with Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups, one senior American official said. The Obama administration has said it is not providing arms to the rebels, but it has also acknowledged that Syria’s neighbors would do so.

Obama authorizes secret support for Syrian rebels

Wed Aug 1, 2012

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-syria-obama-order-idUSBRE8701OK20…

President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, sources familiar with the matter said.

Obama's order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence "finding," broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad.

Syrian Rebels Used Gas (previous attacks)

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-syria-crisis-un-idUSBRE94409Z20130505

"U.N. human rights investigators have gathered testimony from casualties of Syria's civil war and medical staff indicating that rebel forces have used the nerve agent sarin, one of the lead investigators said on Sunday.

The United Nations independent commission of inquiry on Syria has not yet seen evidence of government forces having used chemical weapons, which are banned under international law, said commission member Carla Del Ponte."

So we have a history of the US forming and causing disruption in Syria, funding rebels, and pushing for regime change. We have UN reports documenting Syrian Rebels using chemical weapons in Syrian and attempting to blame it on the government. And finally, when Assad has the rebels beat, with Russia pulling out because the war is over, with Trump elected, he decided to launch a gas attack that will undoubtably turn the world against him and gain him almost nothing militarily.

And the people just sop up this without question. I am sure our handlers in Saudi Arabia are happy about this.

To my knowledge the administration has conveyed proof to the media at the pentagon regarding the chemical attacks. I don't disagree regarding our interventionist ways but you're bordering on conspiracy. It seems to be clear that either 1.) Assad chemically attacked his people or 2.) The United States manufactured the attack as an excuse to bomb the Syrian government. I am inclined to believe (1.) much more than (2.).

Array

Or a third option that is both plausible and supported through previous news articles.

Rebels either used the gas or had a stockpile of it which was released when the Syrians bombed. The last chemical attack was "proof positive" until the UN finished their report and it was a rebel attack.

Btw - ISIS is celebrating this attack.

Typical US shit. And we wonder why the world hates us.

Just as I'm reading this, I see Trump has already ordered and executed missile launches on Syria... What an interesting start to the day.

Just an Undergrad trying to get a job. Something you disagree or dislike about my posts? Let me know by PM'ing me or commenting constructive criticism.

The attacks were at an air base targeting planes, fuel, and supplies. There are unofficial statements saying 6 people died without any mention of them being civilians. The only reason that Obama didn't bomb Syria in 2013 is because Assad agreed to hand over his chemical weapons. Obviously he violated this deal, so America reacted, and have other Western allies agreeing with their decision.

Here I was thinking that Oil would spike today. And yet only a 0.8% increase today. Sad!

In all seriousness, I thought Trump wanted to Make America Great Again. How and where exactly does Syria fit in to that equation?

Not sure how I feel about this. As of now, there are no plans for regime change. But this is how the war drums get started.

It's all a bit of a game unfortunately. I cannot wrap my head around why Assad would use chemical weapons only two days after the US said they would accept his rule. His only real reason was to test the new leash Trump had given him. Trump's response was proportional in that it only targeted the airbase where the attacks originated, and was not an attempt to influence the civil war.

But again, the tit-for-tat is now in play. Russia has sophisticated air defense systems that they can allow Syria to use to attack US planes operating against ISIS in the region. Obviously it's not in Assad's interest to stop these attacks but he may employ them in some capacity if the Russians allow him. It really is all a game.

I mean you asked the right question. Why would Assad want to anger the world and a new President who is embattled, at the exact time that his rule is secured and he's effectively beaten the rebels. His forces continue to gain ground and push the rebels back. Zero strategic benefit for Assad to do this. There is a benefit for rebels to play this up. And they didn't have to do much. The western media and elected officials have zero interest in investigating this and were more than happy to use this as an opportunity to fire missiles and take some of the heat off.

IMO, Trump will continue pushing this narrative to diffuse the Russia & Trump story and give him cover as he reorganizes his internal team. Nothing like toppling a dictator to get the neocons on his side and give him a quick win.

I certainly hope Trump isn't risking a proxy war with Russia to diffuse the investigation story. If he is the dude is a shittier president than I ever thought, especially b/c I don't see the FBI stopping their investigation over our actions in Syria.

Curiously enough, bombing Syria was the first thing Trump's done that's elicited the approval of the media (libs and conservatives alike), neocons, McCain, etc.

I really don't understand the globalists' and corporatists' preoccupation with the Middle East. What is their endgame there?

If Trump continues down this path he's gone in 2020.

Israeli's paycheck. Look up AIPAC and similar lobby groups.

And the fact that a good number of neocons are openly zionists.

Kushner is Jewish, Ivanka converted to Judaism, and they practice the religion, as well are supporters. Isn't Goldman a bank started by Jews? I think Jews and Christians praise the same God, called different names. Come to think of it, why wouldn't Americans feel more compelled to support Jews over terrorism-proliferating Radical Jihadists? I just saw 38 Egyptians get blown to shits this weekend on Palm Sunday. So, I think there's an obvious battle going on.

There's a fair difference between fighting terrorism and supporting an expansionist state. I'm not one of those guys ''durr nuke Israel'', I think Israel has a right to exist, so does Palestine. However, Neocons and Zionists won't be satisfied until Israel has the borders they want at the expenses of everyone else and the surrounding countries are a wasteland so that they can pose no threat in terms of taking back their land.

I want no part in that.

Of all the horseshit in the bill of goods Trump sold @TNA" and 60 million other duped voters, his promise to promote isolationism might have been the biggest con job of them all. This guy gets off on flexing his muscles and never backing down from a fight. He'll be indiscriminately launching missiles into two continents with no follow-on plan in no time. 60 million people fell for his bullshit, and now the whole world has to pay the price.

"I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people."

Yes she did, and I am sure she would have. My point was not to justify or condemn the attack, it was that millions of people like TNA voted for Trump in part because he promised to stop wasting U.S. money on overseas conflicts that don't concern us. Which was horseshit.

"I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people."
