What are your plans when you're 30+ (or what are you doing if you're 30+)
I'm trying to decide whether to go into tech (Microsoft), trading (SIG), or banking (Credit Suisse). Therefore, beyond my next 10 years, I also want to consider what I'll be doing when I'm 30+.
I'm curious what other people have planned (or are doing if you're 30+). If you're thinking of starting a family, for example, how are you able to manage that, along with working at a bank/PE/HF for 70+ hrs a week? If you could go back to being 20, would you change the field you're in currently? What pros do you see in banking that you don't see in other coveted industries?
So I had a plan when I was 20. Thing is, plans don't usually work out as expected. A LOT has changed, I am practically a different human being compared to back then. Girlfriends came and went, same for jobs, cars and apartments. The only constant were my friends and family members who I can rely on. My hobbies and interests have expanded drastically. I went from having seen 20 countries to 49. There is another language and culture I have learned.
What I would do differently?
I would have gone to a better school, if I knew it back then. And if I could have afforded it somehow.
Had too many jobs in too many countries - less could've been more, maybe?
I should've spent more money, was a bit too strict with leisure spend.

I wasn't able to have a family because I strictly focused on work, travel, hobbies, dating and friends. There are only so many hours in one week and thoughts like having a wife and kids require men to stop being boys and acting like men. I am the first to admit that I am still not mature enough for that, although that is changing now.
If one really wants to have a family, he needs to stop sleeping around, he has to look at the right girl and take her from the dating stage to the next level.
If you’re working 70+ hour weeks in your mid to late 30s you’re doing it wrong.
Can you elaborate? I've heard hours get slightly better as you go higher, but not significantly better. Instead, your work becomes less monotonous, so it doesn't feel as long.
I think he means work hard now so you don’t have to at 30+. What’s the point of working 80 hours a week if you’re always going to work 60+ hours. Save & invest so you build an asset base to live off of
I feel like this is a personal attack. For your information, I happen to work 70+ hours in my mid thirties. Did I do something wrong? Absolutely.
What if you're running your own business/businesses?
I think everyone who is ambitious has a goal of running their own company or at least segment under an umbrella. You become a different beast working in your own thing

Its impossible to predict what you want to he doing in 10 years but I don’t blame you as I was the same way. What I will say is that banking is an industry that truly allows you to keep your doors wide open. You could give investing a shot, corp dev, etc. I don’t think there are many jobs under undergrad that allow you to do that (maybe consulting too)
