Stop posting useless questions
I know it's coming time for summer analysts to start interviewing, but stop posting useless questions like 'what are my chances at getting this' or 'what does the interviewer telling me this mean' or stupid ass shit like that. Stop coming to this board to 'confirm' what you already think. If you ask a question and the answers won't change the outcome, then don't ask it. If you ask a question and you don't accept critical/scathing answers, then don't ask.
What few senior people left on this board who can actually help answer REAL questions will stop answering altogether, so please stop for your own sakes.
Ouch, pretty bitter post. While some people may be frustrated by the amount of inconsequential questions on the board, they do generate a level of actvity and content. I'm at the point where I can stop myself from clicking on most threads I have no interest in, as I'm sure many others are. I think we should all be glad that the "which bank is better?" threads have died down significantly as of late. Overall I find the level of posts just "taking up space" to be pretty manageable.
CompBanker - I agree with you in that the number of manageable posts have significantly died down.
Although, Mr. White - I'm just as annoyed by the number of "What are my chances" posts. Guys - our answers aren't going to keep you from applying and pursuing your leads, so really why ask? And if our answers will determine whether you give up or not, you don't have the persistence and confidence required to get your foot in the door anyway. Please stop asking the board these questions to make yourself feel better.
Perhaps an immediate redirection to the 'Get a Job' subforum should be the stock response?
There really ought to be a script the scans posts for 'whut r my chansus @ gttin in @ ????!1?!one?' and flags them accordingly :)
Perhaps my banana-level is too low to be able to give a valid opinion on this, however!
While it's inevitable that some posts and questions will be useless, poorly thought out or annoying, I don't think its a good idea to discourage people or make them think twice before they ask questions with negative posts like this one. The best thing to do is just ignore the bad posts if you don't want to answer them, or explain to the specific poster why you think his post is wasting your time.
mr. white i'm sorry us rookies are taking up your valuable online forum browsing time... wait, no i'm not
So true. It's almost annoying at times. As a favor to anyone who asks, here are answers to the four most frequently asked questions on this board:
ANSWER: Your chances are zero if you don't apply no matter how much confirmation you do/don't get from anyone on this board.
ANSWER: See Q1
ANSWER: Read the job description and use Google. I still don't understand how this question gets asked.
ANSWER: Exit opps are almost exactly what you think they are. You can't lateral from ops at Keybanc in Cleveland to Restructuring for Blackstone in NYC.
ewong 3.5 wesleyan? What? You're FUCKED? Yeah stfu fag.
Oh wait, you're going for a teller position, I guess you're just fine.
although you all make very good points about repetitive questions being annoying and "a waste of space", is it really that much of a burden on your day? is your experience at wallstreetoasis made that much worse because you have wet-behind-the-ears undergrads asking questions that you find "dumb" and "annoying"? we know you're all hot shot bankers and you know your shit... hence why we signed up for this board to begin with, because we hope maybe you can give us advice as it pertains to us on a case by case basis...
yes you're right that a lot of the "i'm from (insert school) with a (insert gpa) what are my odds at (insert BB firm)" are very similar and should receive similar responses, but you have to realize we repeat these questions because we seek answers as they pertain to our specific situations... not to mention that the search function on this website pretty much sucks the big one.
if seeing the TITLE of a thread really pisses you off that much, don't click the damn thing... and if the members of this board are really that big of pricks that they'll stop giving advice because of the exorbitant amount of "stupid questions", then so be it... but ask yourselves, would you rather have kids not asking questions for fear of being reprimanded or would you rather just bite your tongue and deal with it? if i were a hot-shit-big-swangin-dick like you fellas, i'd choose the latter.
real classy mr. white... real classy... the homophobic comments and the attack on the school really exemplifies your intelligence and worth

Tell me how getting answers to your 'situation' helps you smart guy? If I tell you your odds are 0% does that make a difference? Will you give up trying for the position? Yeah...thought so. So please stfu.
I answer dumb questions on this forum all the time. What's the formula for FCF, what should I change on this cover letter, etc - stuff I'd expect someone could easily find out if they just picked up a vault guide. But I'm not annoyed about that.
However, when you and others ask inconsequential questions where the answers don't matter, such as "i'm from (insert school) with a (insert gpa) what are my odds at (insert BB firm)", then that's a waste of time for someone like me that actually looks to help and answers questions that I may not be interested in, because nobody else is going to answer those threads.
actually, sir, mr. white, if a reputable individual were to inform me that my odds were 0%, i would definitely give up on the position... unfortunately as an anonymous online poster, you do not qualify as said individual... but seeing as you've informed me that i'm F-CKED because i'm from wesleyan with a 3.5, i think i'm going to call the 1st and 2nd year analysts alumni that i know at BBs in nyc and let them know they're F-CKED and wont be getting ibanking analyst positions... oh wait, they already work there...
and is that really how this board works, mr.white can just dock my bananas because i pissed him off? i kinda like havin bananas mr. white, so i'm going to kindly ask you to please refrain from ridding me of more banana points... sir.
"actually, sir, mr. white, if a reputable individual were to inform me that my odds were 0%, i would definitely give up on the position... unfortunately as an anonymous online poster, you do not qualify as said individual"
And that's exactly my point smart guy. If you're not going to listen to the answers, then stop asking.
"and is that really how this board works, mr.white can just dock my bananas because i pissed him off? i kinda like havin bananas mr. white, so i'm going to kindly ask you to please refrain from ridding me of more banana points... sir."
wtf? dock bananas? I don't even know wtf you're talking about you dumb shit.
ewong if you know you're going to get in, then stfu and stop asking dumb questions on this forum. Oh wait, you're insecure and don't know if you'll get in because you're at wesleyan with a 3.5? Oh yeah...that's what you said on the other forum isn't it?
what makes you a d-bag-anonymous-poster is that instead of logically and reasonably explaining to me WHY i have no shot at ibanking, and HOW i can go about increasing my chances... all you have to offer me are the words "fag", "smart guy", and the acronym "stfu", none of which actually help me... when i posted a thread earlier in regards to my school, gpa, chances, etc... i was answered by an intelligent member who explained to me that its impossible to quantify odds, every situation is different. and when i then had another member look over my resume, he/she aided me and gave me advice on how to increase my chances of an interview and what parts of my resume were my strong suits, weak suits, etc... this would qualify as helpful information that i WOULD listen to, even though its from an anonymous forum member.
are we on the same page mr white? what im tryin to tell you is that, in fact, we rookies DO listen to the advice you give us, and if someone explained to me reasonably WHY i have no shot, i would in fact consider a career change. and for christ sakes we're all adults here so please cut the bullshit name calling and swearing... "smart guy"
Mr. White, I'm a prospective monkey, and I've got to agree with you. If you're so new to banking that you have to ask such inane questions, you need to either:
1) Do a little research before you post, or 2) Choose a different career path.
Yes, I might ask what the FCF equation is, but I'll learn something important from the response.
And to defend Mr. White even more, these posts flood this forum to the point that sometimes I don't even want to check out the forums because 75% of it is trash. Fortunately, I have my share of questions, so I'll keep looking. If I was a senior banker, I'd have no desire to help out.
It's annoying because it pushes the legit topics further down. I don't know about the other people who post regularly, but I usually just tab over, take a quick look, and tab back. If every single topic is "can I get a job, etc. etc." a lot of the legit topics get pushed out of sight.
Also ewong, I'd change your attitude. This whole "bite your tongue and deal with it" is horseshit, there's no reason for anyone to voluntarily post here to help someone who won't take 5 seconds and do a search.
I would stop being a d-bag if people on this forum would stop asking dumb questions. If you asked me for advice I would give it to you. IF you asked me to look over your resume, I would look it over. In fact, I've done that several times just today. On the other hand, when people ask what are my chances of xyz, it's a waste of my time and other posters' time, because it is completely inconsequential.
touche... as a firm believer in the democratic system... i can see that ive been outvoted on this subject matter, and although i believe myself to be correct, the "majority rules" virtue of americana that i respect oh so dearly leads me to the conclusion that i am definitely in the minority in my opinion... ipso fact i concede my argument to mr. white. obviously i overestimated the willingness/tolerance-level of some board members for stupid-question posts, and i will proceed accordingly by refraining from posting anymore threads of said nature. mr. white i wish you the best of luck in all future endeavors. regards.

ok im retarded i have no idea why that last comment posted a gazillion times... apologies
ewong, I don't like being an asshole. I don't like arguing on an anonymous forum and getting pissed. I basically never ask questions on this forum and I choose to spend my time perusing through the topics in order to see if I can help anybody out. Do any of these topics interest me? Not particularly. Do I need to teach myself again what the FCF equation is? Do I need to see your resume or cover letter? No, I don't. But I, and I'm sure a few other posters on here, choose to do so because we hope that we will help at least a few people. And speaking from my position, I hate seeing these posts for questions that aren't really questions but just affirmations of someones' insecurities (not meant to offend anybody), because it wastes time for people who are trying to help and as ideating said it hides many of the more important topics. If this turns away help for someone that actually needs it, it hurts you guys who are asking for help, not me. If you think you're right, then let's just agree to disagree.
deal
Although I agree with you to an extent, saying things like "Stfu douchebag" and "you wont do shit, youure gonna be a bankteller" are ways to guarantee people wont take you seriously and in essence making what words of wisdom you claim to have useless.
.
haha as the guy who asked the FCF question, all I need is GhenghisKhan to respond and my thread is worthwhile. any prospective over junior person can learn something from Ghengis's posts.
but yea, the nonsense "do i have a shot questions" are fewer than before, but what can you do
