Change in Major/Graduation Year Post Intern Offer Acceptance

I'll keep this short and sweet; This summer I accepted an internship offer w/ a large asset manager (think BlackRock, State Street, Vanguard) for a relationship management role. When I applied, I pushed my grad date out a semester (dec 2025) in order to take advantage of the later recruiting cycle (econ requirements were giving me trouble and I couldn't graduate on time w/ the degree at that point in time). Since accepting the offer, I decided to change my major to my university's prelaw/poli sci major. While given that it's a relationship management role and I have finance experience I don't believe my major change will cause an issue - my grad date however is now on target with my original date of aug 2025. I reached out to hr to address this with them but have yet to get a call back -- I'm getting a little nervous in the meantime... As far as I'm aware of I'll need to submit transcripts before hitting the desk. Will this mess up my internship offer? Will this mess up my internship offer? And if this is something I can work around how best should I discuss it with my recruiter? TIA

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

  1. Communicate Proactively:

    • It's crucial to communicate any changes in your academic status to HR as soon as possible. Since you've already reached out, follow up with a polite email or call to ensure they received your message.
  2. Explain the Situation Clearly:

    • When discussing with HR, be transparent about why you changed your major and how it aligns with your career goals. Emphasize that your graduation date is now back on track, which should be seen as a positive development.
  3. Highlight Relevant Experience:

    • Make sure to highlight your finance experience and how it makes you a strong candidate for the relationship management role, despite the change in your major.
  4. Prepare for Transcript Submission:

    • Since you will need to submit transcripts, ensure that all your academic records are up-to-date and accurately reflect your new major and graduation date.
  5. Potential Impact on Offer:

    • Based on similar scenarios discussed on WSO, changes in major or graduation date typically do not result in rescinded offers, especially if the new major is still relevant to the role. However, it's important to address any concerns HR might have promptly.
  6. Follow-Up Strategy:

    • If you don't hear back from HR soon, consider escalating the matter by contacting a different HR representative or your recruiter directly. Be polite but assertive in seeking a resolution.

By addressing these points, you can mitigate any potential issues and demonstrate your commitment and transparency to your future employer.
