Need help evaluating a Asset & Wealth Management role.

Currently working in sell-side ER BB. Its been slightly over a year here and most of time is spent collecting/updating/maintaining databases for the analyst. I was looking for opportunities outside and interviewed for a role at AWM-Portfolio Management at JP

The job description mentions about portfolio construction but after few rounds what I have realized is that - its for their arm that manages private/UHNW type of clients. And that I would be expected to create tools for the PMs. The success of role relies on creating various tools("tools" word was used repeatedly) and its not tied to PnL of portfolios managed by your PM. It felt like analytics type of a role.

  1. From growth and future prospects POV am I better off in my current role or the AWM role? I am interested in quantitative investing oriented front office roles. another option is to keep trying( meaning maybe I can land better role than this given my current profile)
  2. Would like to hear any other insights on this arm of JP

It actually sounds like you picked up on the most important part that JP’s AWM role isn’t a true portfolio facing PM seat, but more of a tools/analytics support function for UHNW advisors. There’s nothing wrong with that type of role, but it won’t really move you closer to quant or FO investing the way you’re aiming for
