Putnam Investments Equity Associate
Hi everyone,
I recently found out I have an upcoming first round interview with Putnam for their Equity Associate entry level role. I am very excited for this opportunity, as I am most interested in buyside equity research, and I was hoping some of you fellow monkeys might have some insight into what an interview of this kind might entail. If any of you have interviewed with putnam or a similar shop for this type of equity research role and had some info/advice to share that would be great.

how hard are these positions to come by? how selective are they?
how does this work experience compare against other types of finance for b school?
They hire about 4-5 ER associates/year and this role is incredibly selective/prestigious/would be great for B school. Be ready to articulate your opinion on the markets and explain how current events have been impacting the market. Be prepared to pitch a stock.
Also expect 70k base 10k signing and 20-30k or so performance bonus. Keep in mind you will only be working ~60-70 hours a week.
How does Putnam's ER Associate differ from Putman's investment Associate position...?
The Putnam Investments Associate job is a two-year rotational program that shows you the different aspects of their business. (Working in Andover as well as the Boston office).
Is the Investment Associate position similar to the ER Associate position with regards to prestige/selectivity and compensation?
They serve a different function of the business so the selectivity is about the same, although the associate positions get compensated lower than the ER Associate counterparts. When it comes to prestige it depends on which office you primarily work at.
do you think once i get into the interview that grades won't really matter, and it will more be about my knowledge of markets and stocks that gets me the job? (go to an ivy but have low grades, but was still selected for an interview so they must see potential)
If they invite you to an interview than they believe that your qualified enough for the position and will judge you off of knowledge/fit from the first round as the top criteria and then your qualifications if they need to make a decision between two or more candidates.
They're building up the program after they've had some difficult years lately with a lot of departures, so it should be a great opportunity to have an impact. In addition to what the others have said, know why you want buyside vs. sell side, know some industries and what they trade on, have 3 main points for your pitches, and really show your passion for investing (whether you have one or not). Anyone have any thoughts on the entry level Putnam Investment Associate - Fixed Income Research position? It doesn't sound like the role juniorbanks discussed, more like a counterpart to equity research...
how long did it take to find out you got a first round? Putnam does OCR at my school, resume drop was about a week ago.

Hi guys,
I have a superday with Putnam Investments coming up for an equity research associate position. What do you guys think of the firm and the position? I am especially interested in hearing thoughts on the whether the firm is going to be strong in the future despite its troubles in the past decade, the exit opps this position will provide, as well as b-school opps. How would this compare with working for the AM arm of a large BB?

How was the first round interview?
Be prepared to talk about stock selection, both about individual picks and the general process. That was how my first round at fidelity was like, I expect it'll be similar with Putnam

I just got a first-round interview with Putnam Investments for their summer equity associate internship. I'm a freshman at MIT, and I've never taken any finance/accounting courses. I'm planning on reading Vault Guide and reaching out to alumni. What else should I do to prepare?
