Ruffer Investment Management

Hi everyone,

Curious if any of you have any information on Ruffer in London. I am aware they have a solid track record but less certain about comp progression, culture etc. Any insight would be appreciated!

Make sure you understand whether the role you are looking at is an investment role (research / PM) or a client service ('assistant PM' or variations of that title). Although they run their own funds a lot of their people are in more wealth management / client service type roles as from what I understand that's where their capital mainly comes from. A friend worked there in one of the client-facing roles and was constantly trying to move across to a research role, ended up having to leave to get into an investing seat.

 

I was meant to have a summer there in 2020 but it got cancelled due to Covid. Comp was not in line with large asset managers, it was more of a standard non-finance London grad salary. The place also definitely seemed to be more client-focused as opposed to research, for a grad. Odd because we've all heard about some of their great recent calls

 

As others have said, make sure you know what you're signing up for. They have a few programs and only one has anything to do with research. I think it's their internship. They don't take many people for this.

I have also heard that comp is meh, but not entirely sure what it is. I imagine like most of these sort of shops, comp at the top is great and takes some time to ramp up as a junior.
