What is my path to PM?

As someone joining post - MBA as an associate, I am trying to map out my potential career path. My longer term goal is to become a Portfolio Manager but I know that the path to that at my $10bn fund is going to be very difficult / impossible (my boss told me that during my internship).

I am already 31, have a kid + married, $250k in debt so I am perhaps not as aggressive as I used to be. BUT I still want to have a reasonable career path to PM. How can I execute on my opportunity? And, if I have to, what can I do to position myself for external opps after 5 years or so?
