What is the career path to become a Portfolio Manager?

Hi all,

I'm still an undergrad and my long term goal is to be a portfolio manager of an equity fund at a company like Fidelity or T Rowe Price. What is the typical career path like to achieve this goal? I'm under the impression starting in equity research is the best bet. Does it matter if I work on sell side vs buy side initially? Would it better to start off in investment banking or private wealth management?

I love the public markets and really want to start off on the right track but I'm currently unclear on the typical path to success. Can someone with more experience please explain the best approach to take? I really appreciate any advice in advance.
