WM 2 AM?

Afternoon/evening

currently 23 and working at a big firm in wealth management. It is not my cup of tea. I see myself more in asset management. What can I do on my own to make myself personally more competitive?  Also what would be some good entry level AM roles?  As of now I have the 7,and 66. Should I do the CFA?

all insight is appreciated, remember someone helped you along the way

Gotta work your ass off. Follow markets. Do everything you can to make yourself more competitive. CFA isn’t magic bullet. It’s a hard field to break into. Less than 100 good entry level roles per year. Good luck

AM is tricky to break into, and wealth management is not an area from which is usually happens. As VP in AM suggests, wealth management is seen as a sales role, and you could seek a sales role at an AM firm, but, how the heck do you get from there to the investments side, which is what I figure you want to do. I've never seen a wholesaler become an Analyst or PM. There is a job in asset management that might be closer, and that is a Client Portfolio Manager(CPM). A CPM is supposed to know what is going on in the portfolio like a member of the portfolio team, but his job is to meet with clients and answer questions, and support sales. From a position like this, you would at least be working sometimes with the portfolio team, but it's rare to transition to an investments position from there. I'd like my odds a lot better for a CPM than a wholesaler. Now another pathway could be to try to get sales role on the sell side, and then move into a trading position in AM

Now that said, there's another screwball option you could consider. You could try to join up with some local nuts who are starting a shop buying real estate, or bitcoins, marijuana dispensaries or whatever and work your way up from there. Pretty risky, but it's been done.

I don't know too much about this type of transition, and maybe someone who did it can offer better advice. But I would say, you're only 23. The best thing you can have for getting jobs is relevant experience and relationships. For that reason, you may want to look at transitioning sooner rather than later, because you're probably at least 2 hops from the job you want.
