Networking in ER
So I would be a junior this fall, which means in order to find an internship next summer I would have to kiss a lot of asses. However I was wondering if networking is useful for ER. I mean if I'm hiring someone for my ER department wouldn't I just hire a bunch of MIT graduates with 4.0 GPAs and 10 research papers? Is networking really gonna be effective for ER positions?
At the end of the day, equity research is sales. Mike Mayo said his boss told him “the beer and steak can mean more to some clients than the work itself…” Your group might produce some solid work, but if it doesn't generate flow it doesn't matter… That being said, networking does work—it is arguably more applicable in sell-side research than in banking… Best of luck to you.

Does ER demand junior summer internships as much as IBD? I heard for IBD if you don't get a BB internship it's almost impossible to break in
It varies by the size of the shop, much the same way the entire industry does. Larger shops will have more rigid standards for new hires. I had 3 internships on the resume when I started.
Is there any fundamental difference to work in ER for a BB and botique? Like would you be discriminated against if you are in botique ER and trying to move to buy-side later?
Short answer, yes. That is not a complete answer though. The situation, at least in my mind, would be synonymous to trying to get into a BB firm in NY having attended a non target college. That being said, remember how this whole conversation started? Who you know matters and if you are sharp, know your coverage well and can really sell it, all you need is to get in front of someone. That is my mentality, leverage your network to give yourself a shot and don't fuck up the interview.
