Men's Fashion Hacks
Does anyone know some good fashion hacks to make us monkeys' lives a bit easier?
I've heard putting your dress shirt in the dryer with an ice cube can replace ironing, is this true? Has anyone attempted this?

Only wear black TURTLENECKS and JEANS. It will make SHOPPING for clothing EASIER, which will give you more RECREATIONAL time to spend in SEX DUNGEONS.
Steve Jobs?
Your writing style...IMPECCABLE. Truly, it looks THICK. SOLID. TIGHT.
Beyond the Weak bro?
If you wear cargo shorts you are never getting laid.
couldn't have said it better myself
The only thing cargo shorts can't hold is a conversation with a lady
You get laid as a banker?
For a fee. There are revolving doors from Wall St to the strip clubs.
Nobody's gotten a handjob in cargo shorts since 'Nam
I love how someone gave you monkey shit for this. So much bitterness being held in those side pockets.
.
How the fuck do you get him in the dryer though, isn't he like 5'8 and nearly 200lbs?
this is the best comment of 2017
hhahahahah
Chuck Rhoades is a WSO sleeper pick
I laughed my undies out so fast they landed on my MD's desk. Best. Comment. EVER.
You can do it, put your back in to it.
Same idea as the newer steam equipped dryers. Don't think you'll get as good results as ironing though.
In all seriousness; * The hairdryer on new leather shoes in order to 'wear them in'; and * Taking shirts out of the washing machine and putting them on a hanger straight away to dry, preventing crinkled shirts and making it so they do not have to be ironed.
Those are my two favorite ones.
Dunno about the second one, I've always had to iron all of my crinkled washed up shirts after taking them from the wash rightaway. Seems to work more often with polyester mix shirts though, but I ain't no fan of them.
The military tuck is the best lifestyle hack
never taking off your suit so u dont have to deal with people judging your tucked shirt and therefore less constriction on your back is the best hack
The military tuck is a garbage lifestyle hack. If your classic-fit Brooks Brothers shirt is flapping in the wind with an extra six inches of material around the waist, then go to the tailor and spend $15 to put a couple darts in the back and get it taken in.
Or just go custom. There's a dozen made-to-measure shirt sites, pick one. Life is short, don't be sloppy.
and good made to measure shirt makers you can recommend?
Shirt stays can be awkward, but worth it in the end.
My tip is buy custom shirts from Indochino(or anywhere but Indochina is the cheapest I've found). They're $60 a shirt, which for custom is a great deal and they're decently durable. Most important thing about clothes is the fit so make sure everything is fitted and you'll look great.
M Tailor works too
Brooks brothers non-iron
Solid.
If you're going to be seated at your desk for an extended period of time, remove your trousers first and store on a hanger. In the event you receive a visitor, have your secretary alert you, so you can put your pants back on. This keeps them from getting wrinkled.
Especially works well in that dry Vegas air.
Quality Robert De Niro in Casino reference
The hanger must be key so that no Maestro uses them as a towel.
Turn the shower on the hottest temperature, hang your dress shirt on the back of the bar, and then close the door and leave the shirt for a few minutes. Should steam it not perfectly, but pretty darn well.
Because fuck saving the planet...right?
Because dry cleaning is so much better for the planet...?
Don't use an ice cube, shit will get caught up in your laundry and leave a wet blotch.
If you need a quick fix, dampen a washcloth a tiny bit and throw that in with your Brooks Brothers non-iron. 5 minutes and you'll have a wrinkle-free shirt.
Wear v-neck undershirts so you don't look like an un-dateable tool when you take the tie/top button off at the end of the day and hit the bar. Nobody wants to see that white/lt.grey crew-neck.
Also i put lotion on my leather shoes once a month or so. Leather is skin at the end of the day, and it helps with those weird creases and wear patterns/scuff marks.
Applying lotion/shoe was/cream on your shoes makes them look better, age nicely and last longer. My 11+ year old pair of black oxfords look way better than my best friend's 5 year old pair with equivalent use.
I'm just glad I'm not the only person who does this haha
What brand(s) do you use for lotion/cream?
Wait, do you mean you use lotion in lieu of shoe polish, or both at different times?
And what kind of lotion? I've never heard of this, honestly.
I second the v-neck comment. Can't help but judge someone when I see a white crew neck (sometimes with sweat stains) popping up under a dress shirt. Looks fcking ridiculous.
you guys dont just dry clean all your shirts and pants?
I dry clean all my shirts and pants about once per month. Between that, I'll throw pants in the dryer and wash and iron my shirts. I really would like to cut back on the dry cleaning though.
I'd like to cut back on my dry cleaning $, but it just doesnt seem feasible. There is no chance in hell that I'm ironing all of my shirts instead of paying the $2 to dry clean them.
I guess I'm just too lazy, but I assumed that everyone dry cleaned all professional clothes
If you need to buy a pair of pants on the fly and can't try them on... wrap the waist around your neck. If it fits, it'll fit your waist.
Works for women at least!
It doesn't "work for women," it works for anyone whose neck circumference is roughly half of their waist's. It's not going to work if you're thick, regardless of gender.
Besides, if a guy who wears a 15" shirt fits into 30" pants, he needs to quit skipping leg day.
and taco tuesday
Well...fuck my life...
And shoulders/back day. A 15" neck is for 15 year olds
Just get a male romper lmao.
People think getting laid in cargo shorts is going to be hard, try getting laid in a male romper.
Dunno what's with the obsession with male rompers.... gay af
Buy suits with multiple pairs of pants. You'll need to change them more often than the jacket.
Use a (clean) hot pan from your stove as an iron.
I mean you could use a steam roller to iron your clothes too.
Do you have one of those in your apartment?
I think actually buying an iron is the fashion hack for this nonsense...
To be honest, I always just had my shirts dry cleaned. My roommate did this (he is the cheapest SOB on the planet).
Put your shirts in the oven for 20 minutes on 600 degrees, and they'll come out nice and crisped.
For those of you in walking cities such as NYC (i.e., no A/C all the time), how do you prevent your collars from turning yellow? I've yet to find the perfect solution, other than throwing the shirt away after a short while.
Google is your friend
I approve of this, OxiClean is a gift from the heavens.
Best fashion "hack" is to buy yourself State and Liberty Dress shirts.
If Under Armour had sex with Charles Tyrwhitt, you'd get a State and Liberty dress shirt.
They're fitted for athletic guys so they don't get that stupid blousy look around the waist and the sleeves don't look like you just got out of a pool and are still carrying water.
They run $90 bucks, which is the same as BB and other similar shirt cos that everyone recommends, except they're machine washable and the dryer takes out all the wrinkles, so they're basically free once you account for laundry cost, you save time picking them up and you never have to iron them. It's only a bonus that you'll look better than every other person wearing a "slim" fit dress shirt.
Did I mention they're comfortable as fuck? They feel more like Lulu Lemon than a dress shirt. I've legitimately forgotten workout clothes and done a full lift wearing my dress shirt.
Anyways, give S&L a look. I literally refused to wear any other dress shirt. Might be too slim for some guys, but if that's the case then I'd say your best fashion hack would be to fix your diet.
Enjoy your shirts and thank me later.
i wonder what company you work for....
I work at a Hedge Fund actually.
Just trying to help out a dude who puts ice cubes in with his dress shirts to get wrinkles out.
You can also check out Mizzen & Main who do a similar shirt.
Also try not being a dick next time someone tries to help you out.
jfc finally someone understands what it's like to have that kind of body type
For real, ice cubes and clothes? Turning on the shower to get wrinkles taken away? Sounds like a huge pain in the ass. If you are thinking about this crap, then you aren't gonna be focused at work. I tried state and liberty but felt kinda funny and wasn't for me.
Mizzen+Main is pretty nice - same idea - but material feels awesome, comes in better patterns, and definitely is 99% maintenance free. Doesn't look synthetic at all. Made for athletic body types, and if you got broad shoulders the stretch helps.
https://mbsy.co/hHdMs --> that will get you $25 off and free shipping/returns. Might as well give it a shot and just return if it doesn't work. Everyone fits differently.
Don't wear patterns with patterns... this is a killer for me.
If you're wearing a pattern it is only acceptable to wear a solid colored shirt with a patterned tie, or a patterned shirt and solid colored tie.
Obviously solid with a solid is always professional, but choose your colors wisely.
Disagree. It's called power clashing, and I do it because I can.
Any thoughts on the vest? I was watching the Untouchables movie (1987) and was loving the vests, so I picked one up from Suitsupply a few weeks ago. Finally got the courage to wear it today. Objectively, I look freaking amazing, but men around me are so poorly dressed (shirts that are too baggy, pants that are too baggy, dirty shoes, etc.) that I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb. I love my country, but I really hate how in America if you dress well you set yourself up for criticism.
I couldn't agree more.
It sucks that we are viewed a certain way because we choose to present ourselves in the best way possible. I sometimes watch shows like Mad Men, etc. and think of the days when wearing a suit and tie to work wasn't for those just in finance or in certain cities but it was more seen as professional.
I get the comfort argument, but for fuck sake a suit always has, and always will, be the best dressed a male can be.
In all honesty, the vest can look phenomenal if it is done right - did you go for a plain black/navy style, or did you pick up a three piece all at once? Do you also wear pocket squares?
I have few, if any contexts, where a 3-piece suit wouldn't have me sticking out like a sore thumb, so I figured there's no point in it. With regard to the vest, I got a nice navy blue one that works well with all of my colors (navy blue is amazing that way). Suitsupply is just f*cking amazing. I love, love, love their stuff. I wear pocket squares from time to time, but since my Persian friend moved away I do it less often.
Patrick Bateman would be very disappointed. Start with: Charvet Thomas Pink Etro Hickey Freeman Paul Stuart Paul Smith
How could you forget Paul Blart?
Super late to this, but my number one hack is tuck your undershirt into your underwear. See #3 here: http://www.artofmanliness.com/2014/04/15/how-tuck-in-shirt/
Not even sure how to describe it, but it helps keep both your undershirt and dress shirt from moving around. Felt really weird the first two days, but now it feels weird when I don't do it. Worth giving a shot to see if you like it.
Use shoe trees. Keeps the shoes fresh and prevents creasing.
Things that come to mind in no particular order:
Maybe 7 or 8 years ago I had a steamer and it sucked. What steamer do you use? I'd love to save $600/year on dry cleaning.
I have this one
While double monk straps are kewl and all, def not possible for an analyst. I feel like you've gotta have some sort of solid performance history and respect before you could make that dive
I'm an analyst and have had no problems with dark brown (almost oxblood) double monks. With a dark grey or navy suit they look sharp as hell. I've come to learn - despite what WSO has to say - if you are working for a successful firm/team, people are generally too busy to really give a shit what you are wearing as long as you don't dress like an idiot. I cringe when I see threads on this forum asking if specific tie patterns are appropriate for an analyst/associate, or if "this shade of brown" is too unprofessional.
"Stand up straight when you walk"
So much this.
Your writing style!!!
The best I can think of is, if you are wearing a shirt under a sweater, iron just the wrist and collar!
good quality jeans need less ironing. I hang my tshirt to dry on the hangers themselves and it helps, shirts are a bt harder to deal with but if I dry them in a dryer the come out smoother.
pro tip - throw a fleece vest over (almost) any t-shirt or sweater and look 5x smarter. no effort required.
