Does major really matter?

I’m currently choosing between majoring in econ or finance right now and I’m wondering how much it really actually matters for my career what I choose. I see people from Yale on LinkedIn who studied History and have BX and D1. Does this mean all advantages from choosing the most “desirable” major from the eyes of a firm can be overcome by better interview prep? I don’t know what to think because my intuition would say the more rigorous majors would have better placements, but then I see History majors crushing it beyond what I would even consider possible for most finance majors. Any insight is much appreciated.
