MM HF SA -> What? (no return offers)

Signed at a tier 3 ish MM for SA26, basically told no return offers are gonna be given out for pods. Better than nothing, and wanna do markets long term so signed. What are my options here?

Obviously looking at CAP, Millennium, and P72 FT programs, but what else could I do? Thinking about getting on the SS (preferably banking), but wondering how I would even spin this. Also looking at some PE programs, though I get the BX, WP, BainCap tier probably isn't possible.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of your options and strategies:

  1. FT Programs at Top MM HFs:

    • Your focus on CAP, Millennium, and P72 is spot on. These platforms often have structured FT recruiting programs, and your prior MM HF experience, even without a return offer, can still be valuable. Networking and leveraging alumni connections will be critical here.
  2. Sell-Side Opportunities (Banking):

    • Transitioning to the sell-side, particularly in investment banking, is possible but will require a strong narrative. You can spin your MM HF experience as a demonstration of your interest in markets, analytical skills, and exposure to investment strategies. Highlighting your adaptability and eagerness to learn will be key.
  3. Private Equity (PE):

    • While top-tier PE programs like BX, WP, or BainCap may be a stretch, middle-market PE firms could be more attainable. Your HF background might not align perfectly with traditional PE recruiting, but emphasizing transferable skills like financial modeling and investment analysis could help.
  4. Other Hedge Funds:

    • Beyond the big names, consider smaller or niche hedge funds. These firms might value your experience and be more flexible in their hiring criteria. Networking and cold outreach can open doors here.
  5. Corporate Development or FLDPs:

    • If you’re open to roles outside of traditional finance, corporate development or financial leadership development programs (FLDPs) at Fortune 500 companies could be viable options. These roles often value analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  6. Networking and Hustling:

    • Regardless of the path you choose, networking will be your most powerful tool. Reach out to alumni, former colleagues, and industry professionals to explore opportunities and gain insights.
  7. Consider a Pivot:

    • If none of the above options pan out, you could explore roles in equity research, asset management, or even fintech. These areas can still align with your long-term interest in markets.

Key Tips:

  • Leverage Your Summer Experience: Even without a return offer, frame your internship as a valuable learning experience that solidified your interest in markets and honed your skills.
  • Tailor Your Story: Be prepared to explain why you’re pivoting and how your HF experience makes you a strong candidate for the roles you’re targeting.
  • Start Early: FT recruiting can be competitive, so begin networking and applying as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Did one of the big 3 SA a few years ago and didn’t get offer (ended up getting FT at another big 3 grad program whilst interning at their peer so it worked out in the end).

All the names mentioned on this site will be relevant and known to ER/S&T if you recruit for tat. Outside of P/C/M you might struggle to get brand awareness from PE/IB recruitment teams

Did you consider PE/IB roles? Was it difficult networking and getting people on the phone/interviews? I would assume the story is pretty straightforward if you can spin it, but wondering if you just get passed over by firms because you did a Big 3 SA.

could also look at credit HFs, liquid credit if you want to stay in markets. depending on if you do alot of shorts in your SA, i could also see you trying for a mid-rx ib like duc, hl regionals, jeff and then going back to l/s
