3.0 Computer Science + Flunked Class + Target School: Do I have a chance at BB?

Hi,

I have a 3.0 in computer science at an Ivy. Last semester I got an "F" in a computer science course (taken again and received an A-) - I partied too hard that semester...really stupid.

Anyway, my GPA slumped to a 2.5 before I received 4.0s all the way up and raised it to a 3.0.

I've taken 4 finance courses and got all As in them and took a Financial Engineering course receiving an A-

Do I still stand a chance at a BB like Goldman or Morgan Stanley? Or are my chances really slim?

Is there any reason why you are only looking at GS and MS, or are you just picking the best names you can think of without doing much more research. There are many BBs out there - do not fall into the trap of only looking to the best 1 or 2 shops and then throwing a tantrum if you don't get the offer - keep your eyes and ears open and look for the best overall opportunities, not simply the best name at the expense of all else.

Coming from a target, as long as the BB does not have a GPA cap above your GPA, you've still got a shot - you're coming from a good school with some relevant coursework. You need to use your network, you need to keep your GPA throughout the rest of your U Grad time, and you need to begin building some internship experience. Good luck.

thanks for the responses guys! so are you all saying they would actually give my resume a second glance, given my low GPA? I looked at the recruiting schedule through my school's online career website...JP Morgan's listing for a summer intern position says their minimum applicant's GPA must be 3.5

From my experience, they'd probably throw your resume out after seeing your GPA. They have cut offs for a reason. They probably receive a few hundred applications from your school and have to narrow it down quickly somehow.

so 2 yes, 2 no? I'm pretty sure I'll be applying WITHOUT networking. Most of my Columbia friends who sent networking emails to alums haven't heard back from a single one and they contacted about 50-100 total. Am pretty sure a lot of our alums are either already laid off or their lives are too stressful to be worrying about helping out undergrads.

So my resume will get thrown out at first glance because of my GPA, without even looking at my other info? (trilingual, started own business, etc...)

dang.

Everyone starts their own business. That's the most easy thing on a resume to bullshit and I think from glancing thrpugh resumes about 50% of students have something like that.

As someone that ran a legit business in college, I can say without a doubt the interviewer will be able to read through the lines of BS for most people (The real good BS'ers are smart enough to deserve the job anyway). There are many ways to check if a business is legitimate, incorporated, credit score of the business, who the rightful owner is, and even if there was any cash flow involved.

From what I can recall BB's have a 3.5 GPA cap, but with strong networking you might be able to get through, although a 3.0 is a significant difference. Having your quals, I don't know why you would specifically request to work at GS or MS, you would be lucky to get an offer at Piper Jeffrey Chiang....jk, but you should open your eyes and set foot on reality. It's not only about the name but about the group culture/industry/deal-flow/experience, etc. You will have to work on the way you present yourself if you want a chance... not impossible though.

As a fellow Columbian, a 3.0 isnt as bad as it seems. I know friends who have 3.1 and got interviews from BAML and Citi. I would say target all of the banks that the CCE is listing and see how you go.

What year are you in?

Best of luck.
