Anyone enter IB after getting a JD?
Humanities major in undergrad, current law student. Never really thought of IB or consulting as an option, but am currently enrolled in a corporate strategy class at the business school and I really enjoy it. Has anyone gone to IB straight from law school? Any advice? At a T14 if that matters.
It’s usually the case that people do M&A law for a few years then switch. Making the jump right out of school will be a tough sell to recruiters - they will be wondering why you’re in law school if you’re not interested in practicing law.
>At a T14 if that matters.
It doesn’t.
Disagree. Pedigree matters. To employers, at least.
Alright, so how does the fact that he’s at a T14 affect the advice you would offer him?
It's ironic how banks often talk about wanting to hire a diverse group of individuals with unique experiences but in reality, if your unique situation doesn't align with their quotas or reputation goals, they wont even consider you.
I actually found that. I came into IB from med school and I definitely found that I got more interviews than people with similar CVs but from an econ/finance background.
Banks are usually open to hiring people from a wide group of majors/experiences, but when you start getting into professional schooling for a specialized career in another field, most places (even corporates) are not going to hire you to do something totally unrelated to that.
It's also a issue of where to place you, someone who does 3yrs of law school is still only really qualified for analyst roles but they likely won't be happy to take a grad-level role and basically waste 3 years of grad school
