Apartments in SF
Hi I’m going to be moving to SF next year as a first year. My office is in the financial district but I have a car and I’m not worried about commute. Any advice on where I should live in the city/ good apartments for a reasonable price. Thank you!
Near Mission Bay has a lot of newer apartment complexes with garages. Rincon Hill also has really nice newer apartments but they're expensive. I would avoid most of SoMa from 5th street to 13th street and I'd avoid living in the Mission too even tho there's a nice park there. I really like the area around Fort Mason. the Marina, Cow Hollow, Russian Hill, Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, and North Beach will probably be the best places to live. Try to find a building with a garage so your car doesn't get broken into. Lower Haight isn't a bad area either. Avoid the Tenderloin area and around the Civic Center and Hastings Law School since that's where a lot of the homelessness is really concentrated. Inner Richmond isn't a bad area but it's pretty far out from downtown. Parking is pretty expensive so even tho you have your own car, I would leave in your garage and take the public transport if I were you and save your car for when you want to go to other areas of the Bay.
Definitely look for roommates. It's expensive to live here by yourself. Bay Area Recent Grads is a Facebook group where people try to find roommates.
How's North Beach in your opinion? I've visited a few times, and feels pretty European, and I hear this is a nice younger working crowd, but want to see if there is decent accessibility to night life? I guess you can just take a short uber to the Marina for bars/restaurants. Feels like the best option from a practicality standpoint getting to the FiDi. Thanks
I like North Beach a lot. Really good restaurants and bars. The nightlife there is fun too. There are lots of bar crawls there on holidays like Halloween and St. Patrick's Day. You have Chinatown to the west of Columbus Ave and Telegraph Hill to the east, the wharf to the north and FiDi to the south. Just be aware there are a ton of hills so start hitting leg day.
What do you think is a reasonable rent expectation for a decently nice 2 bedroom these days?
prob anywhere in between 1.8k each to 2.4k each
Pac Heights / Marina / Cow Hollow areas feel like a different city (in a good way). Would 100% try to live there but it’s going to be expensive. There’s some beautiful new high rise apartments in the Mission Bay / Rincon Hill / Dog Patch area but there just isn’t as much to do around there and feels pretty uneven / desolate in places.
I live right near Oracle Park which was a ton of fun when the Giants were playing, but I agree that there's not much else going on around here. I'd much rather be in the Marina closer to Crissy Beach and Fort Mason
Don't live in Mission Bay, it's a ghost town. The other recs above are good. Lower haight/cole valley area is underrated and close to muni to get to fidi
How do you feel about North Beach? How would you compare it Pac Heights? Both seem practical for me since I'll be commuting via public transport to the FiDi. Thanks!
North Beach is great - if you're working in FiDi it is a very nice place to live and on par with Pac Heights IMO. Lots of good food and bars around. Pac Heights is better if you're planning on leaving the city since it's a bit easier to get out, but both are nice areas.
