Sounds like the guy is just a jack ass. Keep your head down and work hard and you'll be fine. Things don't usually work out for guys like that in the long run.
Some people are just dicks, which may or may not be what's going on here. Just keep working hard and doing good work, and maybe in a couple weeks set up a meeting with him where you tell him point blank that you want specifics about how you could improve.
Sounds like a jealous scumbag with an inferiority complex, feeling threatened by someone smarter and more capable (you). I am also willing to bet he is not from a top target or anything on par, and probably side-doored his way in. I can empathize, as I have experienced a similar situation. If you really want to rub salt in his wound, smile right in his face when he gives you a hard time, and turn in impeccable work. The aforementioned combination will drive him absolutely nuts.
Maybe, but if you have even average level people skills you don't need to play mindfuck games with people in order to figure out whether they're pussies. If you're good you'll know before they even open their mouths.
If you REALLY want to do IB there's any number of other firms out there with which you could intern next summer. Get working.
"jumpupnyc123" I know people are super intense and competitive. I would consider myself to be nice and soft/easy-going. Should I be more assertive?. Basically I believed he just think I am in the wrong place.
You said it yourself, you're soft.
What he's doing here is testing you to see if you have backbone. And so far you're not doing too well. Look, every IB internship, big or small, is going to have people that do this. I interned at a big bank last summer and went through all kinds of insane shit. It comes with the territory.
And the reason why is because banking isn't all just finance. It's about people and relationships. If you can't be assertive and command respect in a humble way, no one will respect you. And if no one respects you, no one will work with you. And if no one will work with you....
Well you get the point.
Be assertive, but do it in a humble way. If he gives you real advice, take it to heart. And when the time comes to go above and beyond, do it. The only way you gain respect is if you earn it. So ditch the bullshit soft/nice persona and grow a backbone. Focus on your work, not on who's nice and who's mean.

He might be testing you to see if you're a pussy. So far, you are failing.
