Appropriate Hairstyle

Hey monkeys. I am starting my summer analyst position in T-minus 2 months, and right now am loving my mullet (ladies love it too). Was wondering if this would be acceptable at a West Coast firm.

Thanks in advance!

My brother in Christ, idk who is gassing you up on this mullet of yours but I can indeed ensure you that the ladies do not love it, and neither will your VPs/MDs. Cut that shit off before you start if you want that return offer son

I think the mullet would look great in SF, especially during the pride parade 🏳️‍🌈

Let’s put it this way, you will never be hired for your haircut, but you can definitely be dinged for your haircut.

It is something that provides no professional upside whatsoever but could prove the dealbreaker if there’s one spot left and you’re neck and neck with someone. Up to you if keeping a mullet (and the chicks definitely don’t dig it) is worth that risk.

Former roommate as a GS trader rocked shoulder length hair and sometimes a ponytail. He was good enough that no one gave him that much crap, most people loved it. When he became a global head of credit for a top IB they straight up told him to cut it before he started as he was in leadership. It can go so far, and I also pushed boundaries pretty hard on facial hair, which wasn't crazy and has been documented on this site. Still, if you're great and NOT a first year, you can get away with some things, but corporate culture will always come for you at some point.

Part of being successful in investment banking is "getting it". And part of "getting it" is understanding that sometimes the things that seem inconsequential are actually most important. Since you've asked for advice I would suggest you take up the style and attributes of an exceptionally polished investment banker. Much like picking out a suit - it's best to stick to the tried and true, at least until you've had your legs under the desk sufficiently long to make discerning judgements and adopt the effortless grace of "sprezzatura".

Mullets are polarising, people have strong reactions (love/hate). Probably why you say ladies love it and comments say they don't (commenters don't realise peacocking benefits).

Corporate culture is to be non-polarising and risk-averse until you've built enough credibility. Hence, mullet = cull it. If you're in O&G then it'll slide though.

Personally think a lowkey modern mullet could be pulled off especially in a SF satellite. Just put some water on the back to make it stick out less during meetings. Key is no aggressive fades or an excessively long/voluminous tail
