Appropriate Hairstyle
Hey monkeys. I am starting my summer analyst position in T-minus 2 months, and right now am loving my mullet (ladies love it too). Was wondering if this would be acceptable at a West Coast firm.
Thanks in advance!

The ladies don’t love it brother 🙏
😔
I personally think a mullet can look very good on a certain type of person. Anyways, this person is not the average finance bro.
Looks good on rednecks

The ladies fs dont love it gangy
the ladies do anything but love it.
Hilarious. Also no not acceptable
Please rock a mullet day one 🙏🏼 I look forward to the WSO post from someone in your pit commenting on how disgusted your MD is.
Seconded
My brother in Christ, idk who is gassing you up on this mullet of yours but I can indeed ensure you that the ladies do not love it, and neither will your VPs/MDs. Cut that shit off before you start if you want that return offer son
I think the mullet would look great in SF, especially during the pride parade 🏳️🌈
Posts like this make WSO worth checking from time to time— please keep the mullet, and I look forward to future updates and how fond your MD will be of your style
Keep it if you’re gonna be in SF. Anywhere else get a chill haircut.
Let’s put it this way, you will never be hired for your haircut, but you can definitely be dinged for your haircut.
It is something that provides no professional upside whatsoever but could prove the dealbreaker if there’s one spot left and you’re neck and neck with someone. Up to you if keeping a mullet (and the chicks definitely don’t dig it) is worth that risk.
i'm as liberal / new age as they come and i wouldnt be happy with you in a mullet. felt the same with a guy who showed up on day 1 with an ear piercing
do it and let us know how it goes!

Former roommate as a GS trader rocked shoulder length hair and sometimes a ponytail. He was good enough that no one gave him that much crap, most people loved it. When he became a global head of credit for a top IB they straight up told him to cut it before he started as he was in leadership. It can go so far, and I also pushed boundaries pretty hard on facial hair, which wasn't crazy and has been documented on this site. Still, if you're great and NOT a first year, you can get away with some things, but corporate culture will always come for you at some point.
traders get a little more leeway than bankers
Part of being successful in investment banking is "getting it". And part of "getting it" is understanding that sometimes the things that seem inconsequential are actually most important. Since you've asked for advice I would suggest you take up the style and attributes of an exceptionally polished investment banker. Much like picking out a suit - it's best to stick to the tried and true, at least until you've had your legs under the desk sufficiently long to make discerning judgements and adopt the effortless grace of "sprezzatura".
Mullets are polarising, people have strong reactions (love/hate). Probably why you say ladies love it and comments say they don't (commenters don't realise peacocking benefits).
Corporate culture is to be non-polarising and risk-averse until you've built enough credibility. Hence, mullet = cull it. If you're in O&G then it'll slide though.
Love how all the finance virgins hopped on to tell you what ladies love and don't as if they've ever felt the touch of a woman before. Rock the mullet now if you like it and go more conservative when your job starts.
Grow it out and try a wolf cut
I think I’d rather see a mullet than another broccoli head alpaca analyst with the messy fringe covering their forehead looking like they haven’t put a comb through their hair in 6 months.
Go for the Island Boys spikes
what about facial hair (as an intern)?
Pencil moustaches only
What about the beard(s)?
Bay Area only, anywhere else, and you should chop it off.
i had a mullet during mine and i just kept it a bit more trim in the front and back so it wasn’t as bad
Personally think a lowkey modern mullet could be pulled off especially in a SF satellite. Just put some water on the back to make it stick out less during meetings. Key is no aggressive fades or an excessively long/voluminous tail
It’s no big deal OP, since you won’t have any hair left c.2 weeks into IB
I have a perm that goes down to my shoulders and I never get push back on it. I'm on a corp dev team at an O&G company in Texas, so I'd guess it'd be even more acceptable on the west coast.
what's the view on mullets or bleached hair like the one above in London, UK / Europe offices?
A mullet might be fun, but for a summer analyst, it’s safer to stick to a classic hairstyle at first.
mullet with faded sideburns does not look good. Bare minimum recommendation is something like this hair flow style:
