Are most firings in this industry politically driven?

Excluding the incompetent, are most layoffs and firings politically driven based on not being liked by seniors? I’ve seen and worked with some pretty incompetent people who didn’t get the axe.

How precisely (or vaguely) can one plan to be on the good side of office politics (for layoff-relevant purposes) in London – asides having a good work ethic
