Are Stock Pitches a Thing in Rx?
Hi all,
I'm looking to go into restructuring and want to recruit next cycle, and I'm wondering — are stock pitches a big thing in restructuring and their interviews? I know pitches are big in private equity, regular IB recruiting, etc. but is there much of a focus towards that in Rx? I ask cause I'm not part of many pre professional finance clubs on campus and feel a bit out of touch. Thank you :)
In the realm of restructuring (Rx) interviews, the focus shifts significantly from stock pitches to a deep understanding of the restructuring process, distressed companies' dynamics, and technical knowledge related to financial distress situations. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of what's emphasized in Rx interviews:
Technical Knowledge: Rx interviews tend to delve into technical questions specific to restructuring. This includes understanding how to model Payment-In-Kind (PIK) interest through the three financial statements, asset write-downs, and the nuances of performing a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis for a distressed company. The valuation of a distressed company's Enterprise Value (EV) also takes center stage, requiring a nuanced approach compared to healthy companies.
Restructuring-Specific Questions: Candidates are expected to demonstrate a grasp of the general dynamics of restructuring, including the characteristics of distressed companies and the various types of out-of-court and in-court restructurings. Knowledge about the Chapter 11 process, cram downs, Debtor-In-Possession (DIP) loans, and the roles of different stakeholders in a restructuring scenario is crucial.
Qualitative Understanding: Beyond the technical aspects, Rx interviews also probe candidates' qualitative understanding of the restructuring field. This includes discussing what restructuring bankers actually do, the types of restructurings (beyond Chapter 11), and the strategic considerations in restructuring scenarios.
Passion for Restructuring: Especially in elite boutique firms, there's a preference for candidates who are genuinely interested in and passionate about restructuring. This passion can be demonstrated through self-study, following industry news, and engaging in relevant discussions or clubs, even if not directly related to finance clubs on campus.
While stock pitches might be a staple in private equity and general investment banking interviews, Rx interviews place a heavier emphasis on specialized knowledge and skills pertinent to restructuring. It's advisable to focus on building a solid foundation in these areas and demonstrating a keen interest in the restructuring space.

Have never been asked this for rx, personally didn’t think pitches are a thing for interviews in ib. Def for wm they do though
