Ask My Banker Contact for a Template

I'm a Manager at a corporate. Looking at an acquisition in a space that we have not looked at before (no prior materials or model). I don't want my team to put in the effort, and consequently have to check it myself. So I am thinking asking one of the MM / lower tier BB banks that we have engaged with (i.e. have a relationship with) whether they can send us a model template. I know they have worked on TXs in this space and so would have model. Thoughts from experienced folks? is this OK to ask your "Acquaintance" i-banker for this favor (assuming there is a relationship as I said) or am I thinking unconventionally? Thx

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

  • Asking for Templates: It's not uncommon to leverage your network for resources like model templates, especially if you have an established relationship with the bank. Given that they have worked on transactions in the space you're interested in, they likely have relevant models.

  • Approach: When making the request, ensure you frame it in a way that acknowledges the value of their time and expertise. You might say something like, "Given our ongoing relationship and your experience in this space, would it be possible to share a model template that we could use as a starting point?"

  • Considerations: Be mindful of the bank's policies on sharing proprietary materials. Some institutions may have restrictions on distributing their models outside of client engagements.

  • Alternative: If you're concerned about the appropriateness of the ask, consider offering something in return, such as a future engagement or a reciprocal favor.

In summary, it's generally acceptable to ask for such a favor if you have a good relationship with the banker, but always be respectful and considerate of their policies and time.
