Associate Portfolio Manager?

I am interested in an Associate Portfolio Manger position at a prestigious Asset Management company (think AllianceBernstein). Technically, you are a junior member supporting more senior portfolio managers. How is this position perceived as? Does this position lead to any great exit opportunities such as top MBA or possibly opportunities such as hedge fund or private equity?

Please share any of your thoughts, thanks.

I will think Alliance Bernstein because it probably is Alliance Bernstein, as they are one of the few large firms that use this title liberally. On the one hand, the title sounds good. Normally a PM, of any kind, is going to have several years of experience and it many funds, it's the head of the food chain, behind only CIO if there is one, or the founder. At AB, associate PM is a pretty entry level role, but an adcom might not know that...and it has a brand name attached to it, which also helps. Regardless, I wouldn't get too caught up in prestige of title for b-school apps, it's more about showing progression and/or clearly outlining your goals.

Different story if you try to lateral on the buyside. Hedgies are going to know that you weren't doing anything close to real PM work so I wouldn't try to make them think otherwise.

If you want to do AM, it's probably a decent place to start from an educational perspective
