BAML Top Industry Groups for SAs (2016)
Hi all,
I will be interning in BAML IBD this summer and with placement day coming soon, I wanted to hear WSO's thoughts on which industry groups there are good and bad?
I have been told that BAML Real Estate is good, but I don't want to be pigeonholed. Based on previous threads, it seems like Energy and TMT aren't great as well.
How would you rank C&R, HC, Industrials, and FIG at BAML? Any input appreciated.
Healthcare and Industrials are well regarded.

Is this for the NY office ? If so, FSG, M&A, Lev Fin, HC are all good groups to be in.
From the guys I know at the NY Office they've told me, in no specific order: HC, LevFin, REGL, Consumer/Retail. Prob other ones too but this is just from who I've spoken to.
Sponsors and M&A are probably top followed by healthcare and lev fin
Energy is good in Houston, relatively weaker in NY. Real estate is also good. C&R is a good group but I found the people extremely douchey. Think industrials is also solid.
Healthcare USED to be one of the best on the Street but pretty much every good MD left last year (comp issues) and I dont think I've seen them on any big HC M&A deals since. Would avoid.
Power does a ton of deals but the hours and culture are brutal. Total sweatshop and I hear the exits aren't that great (at least relative to other power groups on the Street like Barclays).
Dont know much anout FIG or TMT.
Sponsors, M&A and Lev Fin are the best groups for exits as an Analyst.
BAML TMT is pretty solid in Palo Alto but not so much in NYC (only Media/Telecom here).
Thanks all. I heard the same thing regarding HC (some MDS left) but also heard that it's still a pretty good group.
I heard that BAML C&R, HC, Industrials, TMT don't do any modeling. That M&A does everything. Any truth to this?
That's true in most BAML industry groups except energy (maybe FIG and RE too? Not sure about that though). Modelling at pitch level but M&A does the deal execution modelling.
Note that tech has its own separate M&A group in Palo Alto that only does tech deals.
Yeah those 3 groups do modeling in house as far as I know. That said, do industry bankers at BAML get decent PE opps or do headhunters only look at M&A, Sponsors, Lev Fin?
BAML tech and tech m&a in palo alto work pretty closely (every candidate needs to be interviewed by both teams). I heard tech group starts to do some M&A modeling right now due to the crazy deal flow.
