Banking Uniform?
I am an incoming SA in NYC at a BB curious about the proper "uniform" for Wall Street. For background, I have worked 3 internships at LMM PE funds where everyone wore dress shoes, dress pants, dress shirt, and a vest. Is banking more formal, or is business casual the new normal?
May have changed since I was around, but generally it was business casual and you'd wear a suit and tie for Fairness Opinions and client meetings. Tons of people worse suits and ties every day presumably because they liked it, but not generally required.
Interesting, thanks. Do remember if any firms were more "traditional" than their peers?
I'm sure that's the case, don't really know though, since the only time I saw folks from other banks was when we were dual-mandated on something and at a meeting with the client, where everyone would always have a suit on.
Take-away is you probably should always start out wearing a suit and tie and observe the behavior of those around you. Then you can dial it in over time.
Don’t wear a vest as an an intern. Start by wearing a full suit and tie until someone tells you to stop. Better to be safe than sorry because a lot of people can be assholes about this stuff. No one cares about how expensive your shit is either, especially as an intern. Last year when we were all in the office one of the directors started roasting one of the interns for wearing loafers without socks and no tie
