I'm currently a Canadian attending a school called Wilfrid Laurier University. My goal is to break into Wall Street so I was thinking of transferring to an American school, and Rutgers is one I am considering the most. I read that Barclays recruits from Rutgers to some degree. If I can maintain a relatively high GPA there and network my ass off, do I have a decent shot at recruitment?

They recruit at Rutgers for back office positions (finance, ops, etc.) If you're looking to break into front office it would be an uphill battle.
Almost all the banks recruit at Rutgers for BO and MO jobs. Some guys break into FO (Goldman's CFO is a notoriously a Rutgers grad and big supporter) but it's a very small amount of people. Think like 3% of those who want to.
Could you start off MO and work your way through the firm into an FO position? Also, do Canadian banks recruit from American schools at all?
GS, Citi, and a few MM International Banks recruit at Rutgers for FO position during OCR. A lot more people from Rutgers get into FO positions that you would think, but as others have said, it is very much a uphill battle.
The alumni are more than willing to help you, as long as you put in the work. Rutgers isn't a target at all, but if your committed to breaking into a FO position, going to Rutgers won't stop you from doing that.
And yes. Many people take MO positions and network internally to move to FO.
Why?... The odds of you breaking in to one of the Big 5 at Laurier must be at least 10x your chance at a BB at Rutgers... And tuition is 4.5x what it is at Laurier (plus books and living so all in ~6x). If you really want to break in to Wall St. either go to a top tier American school or Ivey (they send a handful of people to BBs every summer).
Yes but unfortunately I did not get into the co-op program which puts me at a significant disadvantage. And why do you say that? Laurier has no international rep and only about 5% of students make it on to Bay St in FO.
I am also applying to Ivey, Queens and UBC. Rutgers is an option only if I don't get into a Canadian school.
Whats your GPA? If its below a 10/80% you stand little to no chance of even being looked at by any bank. Also GS, BAML, Barclays, Macquarie and MS have all taken Laurier kids so I don't see the upside of going to Rutgers for slightly better rep. Also your 5% figure is loaded. Most students don't want to do finance, and those who do typically go buyside.
Rutgers is actually a decent player for recruitment on WS for a non ivy.
I know tons who have landed BB gigs in FO from Rutgers.
Rutgers is not viewed highly in the NorthEast. Apply to better schools like Ross, Stern, Columbia, and Wharton
Coming from a current student, you can definitely get into FO. I was nervous about attending here initially, but after talking to seniors and juniors (Barclays, Citi, Credit Suisse, and GS offers among them), it's definitely possible. Just talk to the right people.
Edit: I'll also mention that the Road to Wall Street program, Student Managed Fund, and LIBOR (all business clubs geared towards Wall Street) are extremely well connected.
