Best Internships of 2009

Business Week just published a handy guide for undergrad types ranking the best internships of 2009. The rankings were based upon pay, the percentage of interns who receive full time offers, and a few other metrics. Only two investment banks made the top ten this year, with Goldman Sachs coming in at #6 and UBS (huh?) at #8. The only two other banks to make the list at all were J.P. Morgan at #13 and Barclays at #22.

Accounting interns fared much better than bankers, with four out of the top five internships being in accounting. In fact, accounting interns fared better than just about everyone, with accounting firms well, accounting, for the largest percentage of the top 40. The highest average hourly wage was given by Exxon/Mobil with $31 an hour, and the lowest was provided by Wolf Trap (a non-profit) with a gut-wrenching $6.55 an hour. Insurance galley slaves over at Northwestern Mutual didn't do a whole lot better at $9 an hour.

GE led the field in intern hires, bringing on over 3,000 of their previous intern class (and plans to bring on 3,100 in 2010), But the highest percentage of new hires being former interns went to none other than UBS, with 92% of their first-years being former UBS interns.
