Big 4 Val & Modelling - Do I have a real shot at IB or am I just deluding myself?
After two and a half not-so-pleasant years in big 4 audit (non-target stoner kid who sucked at interviews), I've finally been able to break free and got a job as a senior in the valuations and modelling group at another big 4 firm, in the Toronto office. This job seems quite technical on the modelling side, and also involve some coding and data modelling, but they also said I should get to work on deals through fairness opinions and providing modelling support for the firm's MM corporate finance/IB team.
Of course I'll be learning the actual role and grinding away and won't be applying to other jobs right away, but let's say I do a good job, get the Manager promo in a year and a half, would I have a legitimate shot at IB job at a reputable bank (i.e. BB, Canadian big 5, or strong regional player like National/Canaccord)? I would even be willing to start at the Analyst level (which would prob still offer a good pay raise for a Manager at a Toronto big 4, lmao). I would also have a CPA next to my name, and potentially a CFA as well. I've also gotten some modelling experience even in my audit job as I've been doing goodwill impairment since my A1 year, and worked on a big PPA over the past year too.
Bump
Yes you can, but it will be a long and grueling road for you. I recommend choosing somewhere with a 2 year analyst program because you will certainly come in as a first year
Not in Canada, but I've seen some people make this exact move here in Australia. Depending on the bank you might not even need to move over at an A1 level. My advice is open dialogue with recruiters, and dial in your prep for interviews so that you articulate yourself like a banker.
