BNP IB
Thoughts on BNP for structured finance/Levfin in Global Markets/IBD…? Exit opps, lateral to BB possible? More interested in possibilities to lateral to top BBs & still remain in IB. Appreciate any helpful feedback!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, BNP Paribas is generally considered a solid player in structured finance and leveraged finance, but it is not typically ranked at the top tier for exit opportunities compared to leading BBs or elite boutiques. Here's a breakdown:
Exit Opportunities:
Lateral Moves to BBs:
Remaining in IB:
In summary, BNP is a respectable platform, especially in Europe, but if your ultimate goal is to lateral to a top BB and remain in IB, you'll need to leverage your experience, network aggressively, and position yourself strategically for the move.

Avoid if you have any other option
I got your point thank you
I think BoyWithRizzz recommends to avoid if you have any other option
Mate I’m not 100% sure but I think you should avoid if you have any other option
What if I don’t have any other option? I have a very non-traditional background for the typical IB analyst candidate. Just trying to carve a path into BB IB. So if no other option you recommend going in for just a year?
you can probably go to BB structured products or maybe levfin cap markets. bnp is not super great at levfin in the US but decent at SP. going to top BB m&a/cov is a different story though and you would probably need a step in between
BNP stands for Bonus Not Paid. I recommend you avoid unless you have no other options. Most of their teams are straight garbage as you can see on the League Tables...
but what if I have no other options? I’m simply viewing them as an opportunity to break into IB. I don’t have an IB internship, never did one, so I feel the best place to start is anywhere. As long as im able to lateral to a BB after a while I really don’t mind. In your opinion, would being at BNP be bad for my chances to lateral later on or no?
Obviously take it if you have no other options. What teams are you being considered for?
Definitely not in the EU. I got 100%+
Highly doubt it buddy
Close friend of mine is an analyst there and absolutely hates it and dreads going to work every morning. He is actively looking to lateral and it’s been less than half a year. If it’s your only option it’s better than nothing but European banks in America are genuinely not great spots relative to the Americans
is he finding it very difficult to lateral? i absolutely agree with your point that it’s not the ideal option but it’s still a start. if I get the job im not looking to stay and build a career there, like i said its all about the lateral options you know. thats why i really want to know if starting there helps my chances or not. maybe im not looking at it right so correct me if im wrong pls
i also applied to low tier IB as well, Wells Fargo, TD and a few others. im actively trying to network but the thing is the groups will be assigned after acceptance not prior so im just reaching out to as many people as possible. i know these programs are competitive thats why im only applying for the foreign/lower tier banks because its probably my only shot at getting in. yes i have banking experience but its not IB and so far I haven’t heard anyone in the space say that it necessarily gives me a competitive edge. so not sure if thats the general consensus or its just a bias but either way i know I dont have many options. that’s why IM considering these lower tier banks. I just want to break in man
In case you missed it, BNP does not even appear on the IB Fees rankings.
