BYU as a non-mormon
Im currently a catholic who aligns completely with BYU's honor code and is open to exploring the religion. I know it has a very good pipeline into IB. Would I lose that benefit from not being-mormon or even if I decided to convert?
Bump
You'll be fine - the pipeline is not related to being Mormon, especially if you are a very conservative catholic and would fit in well there socially.
BYU places a disproportionate amount of kids in high finance for the caliber of the university... it is certainly related to being Mormon.
Had a high number of of BYU people in my old group. IMO it's a mix of -
1) the VERY tight-knit alum network (as you mentioned this is definitely linked to being Mormon, but no one is asking your religion on networking calls... if you are a conservative Christian you will fit in just fine)
2) most people are 2 years older, and much more mature / recruiting ready than a typical sophomore
3) excellent recruiting prep on campus
4) very few distractions like alcohol/dating, the honor code leaves a lot of time for academic achievement and on-campus involvement
They traffic in a ton of high-level athletes who are not Mormon. Several alums have come to my group, they did just fine for IB recruiting without being Mormon. The honor code is the real challenge there but if that fits your values you should be fine.
ex-BYU here, if you have absolutely zero issue with the honor code then BYU is a great deal and you should be fine for IB as long as you put in the work.
Lol
You can only get an IB offer if you soak at least 5x your freshman year
I have this thing with Mormons where I think their theology is off base but I've loved every single Mormon I've met. Super chill, normal, kind people. Big fan of my Mormon homies even if Joseph Smith is a fraud.
Ex Mormon here. Basically this. Do consider the Mormons on my floor to be homies and gladly chat them up while holding the largest margarita you've ever seen (they know I am ex Mormon)
Totally second this... Not my cup of tea spiritually, but they definitely teach respect and normalcy.
Same here.
Contemplating abandoning your religion to go into IB? You’ll fit right in!
Its actually pathetic ngl lol
Notre Dame?
The acceptance rate at ND is similar to that of Ivys now once you factor in non-legacy. Almost everyone gets rejected, even with a 34+ on the ACT. BYU is much easier to get in to, which is probably a major concern to this student.
yeah Nodre Dame is absurdly hard especially from my school. No one has gotten in in the last 10 years although we send people all over.
I’m Ex Mormon but I will say most Mormons are actually chill, they might invite you to church every once in a while but just say no politely and most the time they’ll get the message. You def won’t be partying at BYU though so you’ll have to have fun some other way
3 words: ah HELL nah.
Byu is good
OP you should show up on day one with this attitude
Current BYU finance guy here that is not a member. I would say that you would be fine regardless of religion as long as you follow the honor code. I know of a catholic guy in the finance program as well.
No one cared about me both being an LDS(Mormon) when recruiting. If anything it made them more interested in getting to know me.
At this point I would ask yourself the question of does the honor code work for me?
P.s catholics are allowed to drink wine during their communion.
Yo thats sick to know about networking. I was afraid they would ask something like where did you go for your mission trip? and I would akwardly say I didn't do one. Has there been barriers for you connecting with people there at all? That is my only other small concern.
I still got the question about the mission during my calls. I would be like ohh I didn’t because I am not a member and they would get curious and say how did you come about and choose BYU.
With that being said there are also students who didn’t serve any missions so it is kinda just a curiosity question and to see if they know anyone that you served with or your mission president since everyone knows each other. BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY EVERYONE KNOWS EVERYONE.
For connecting with people there has not been any barriers at all. I was able to make what I would call friendships not only with my mormon classmates, but professionals.
At the end of the day connecting with people will just be up to you. I know we have a non-member alumni who was over the Investment Banking Club and now at bank trying to get BYU students in and even though we have 3 non-members the person that ended getting the offer is a mormon. I know of an ex-mormon alumni at a bank and they also pushed mormon kids. It is not about religion to people there, but rather if you are a decent human with basic values aka humble, nice to be around, etc.
In all fairness the only disadvantage you might have compared to your classmates is that there is a high chance them being able to connect better with people since this is what they do on their mission and if they did not serve a mission they learn it from their family and community. Ofc this is a you thing depending on your existing social skills and if you don’t have it I promise you people around you will definitely help you if you ask.
BYU is the best bang for your buck. It is crazy how I only paid 6k a year for tuition. Also, the BYU pipeline is not only strong for IB but also for PE. I hear it all the time. The BYU network is “cracked”. If you are not a member, you will have a great experience. Mormons are taught at their core to respect others and will genuinely appreciate you bringing more diversity to their campus. Each year the school is seeing more non-lds students come and place to IB and mega fund (analyst).
Anonymous monkey from above!
I love your points, but non-members like me have to pay $12K a year, which is still offers the best value in my opinion.
This year, we placed 3 at MS, 3 at GS, 3 at Lazard, 2 at Ares, 2 at Evercore, 1 at JPM, 1 at Vista, and more. The only reason we couldn’t place more is that most had offers before processes like Gs kicked off. We had 5 to 8 spots from GS for BYU, but it was hard to find candidates interested in IB who hadn’t finished recruiting yet.
Most placements are in SF, not due to a lack of opportunities but because students are drawn to the West Coast for tech and family values (being married). For example, while we usually send people to Barc Tech in SF, this year 2 went to Barclays NY and 1 to SF. Similarly, people have traditionally gone to SF Tech for MS, but some have chosen SF Healthcare recently with a guy choosing NY HC 2 years ago.
Compared to NYU, which has more students than positions available, BYU offers more positions than there are students. Additionally, BYU is located in a LCOL area with tuition at $12K per year, whereas NYU is in a HCOL area with tuition at $58K per year. Moreover, our MD alumni are very accessible; when you cold email them, you will likely get a response 99% of the time (unless very busy, but they will get back to you or tell secretary to schedule to reach out for a time in 3 weeks). If you express interest in another group or location at their bank, they are always willing to make a call to help you get pushed through for a SD even if we never sent anyone there before. I had an MD ask me which others banks I am trying to interview for and one of the banks we never had anyone at before. He proceeded to introduce me to an MD there and I got pushed for a SD. You will never get that at any other school.
Low competition, available spots, accessible alumni, great placements, and LCOL make signing up a great choice. No regrets from my side!
