Can I still break into IB even though I'm going to Manchester for BSc Econ?
I got rejected from Bristol and now have to go to Manchester to do BSc Economics. I'm wondering if my chance of getting into IB is now completely down the drain and that now I should start focusing my skills and application to middle office/market roles or do I still have a shot?
Manchester is a semi-target and sends people to FO positions within finance. You can check this on LinkedIn.
Thanks for the reply, I'll make sure to do that. I'm not fully set on IB, more just anything that's front office. I've still got a lot of research to do about the different options.
I did a quick google by the way, looks like their finance society is sponsored by some big names, e.g., BofA, BNY Mellon. I think you'll be fine, but you'll need to work harder, it's not on the same level of semi-target as Durham, Bath, Nottingham, for example.
Ah okay, thanks. By working harder do you mean going out of my way to learn the different skills needed to get internships and full time jobs such as taking courses on financial modelling and valuations?
No, you do not take courses on financial modelling and valuations. These are things they teach you in training anyway on an internship. What you should do:
Target students can get away with not being on committees and such, you not so much. You've got to be very proactive in applying and showing your interest.
Best of luck.
Manchester is not a career killer. I went to Liverpool which is less semi-target and ended up in MM IB.
