Career Pivot

Hi - currently a valuation& transaction analyst at a no-name shop but still advise on some medium sized deals 150mm+. Thinking of a pivot to IB and wondering the best way to go about it. Ie use headhunters, resume drop, LinkedIn networking. Wondering if it might be best to use mba to pivot instead?

Currently 1 YOE + CFA level 1 cleared

Thanks!

To pivot from a valuation and transaction analyst role to investment banking (IB), here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Direct Transition Without an MBA:

    • Resume Optimization: Tailor your resume to highlight deal experience. Even if deals didn’t close, list your role and contributions to make it IB-centric. Focus on sell-side processes, buyer outreach, and any M&A-related tasks.
    • Networking: This is critical. Use LinkedIn to connect with bankers, alumni, and professionals in IB. Attend industry events and leverage any mutual connections to get referrals.
    • Headhunters: While headhunters can be helpful, they are not always the best route for junior roles. Instead, prioritize direct applications and networking.
    • Online Applications: Search for experienced analyst roles in your desired city and apply directly. Many firms post openings online, and your current experience could make you a competitive candidate.
  2. Using an MBA to Pivot:

    • An MBA can be a strong option if you aim to transition to IB at the associate level. However, ensure you target a top MBA program that has strong IB recruiting pipelines (e.g., BB/EB firms).
    • The MBA route allows you to cast a wider net, participate in structured recruiting processes, and potentially switch locations.
    • If you choose this path, continue building your profile by gaining more deal experience and networking before applying.
  3. CFA Level 1:

    • Clearing CFA Level 1 is a good start, but it’s not a game-changer for IB. Focus more on deal experience and networking to stand out.
  4. Key Considerations:

    • If you’re confident in your ability to network and secure interviews, you might not need an MBA. However, if you’re struggling to break in or want to aim for associate roles, an MBA could be worth the investment.
    • Timing matters. The earlier in your career you make the switch, the easier it will be.

Good luck with your pivot! If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask.
