Certain Sayings Seem More Common in IB than in the General Public

I just wrapped up IB recruiting and I don't know if this is just an autistic thing on my end, but I feel like bankers say certain words at a greater rate than the general public.  I don't mean corporate-speak like "circle back" or "double click."

Here are a few examples of what I'm talking about: "Candidly," "Foot in the door," saying "accretive" instead of beneficial, "conducive"

Has anyone noticed this too/ have any other examples? Any etymologists here? Do I just need to touch grass now that I've signed an EBBB offer?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, you're absolutely right—investment banking has its own unique lexicon that often spills into everyday conversations for those in the industry. Beyond the corporate jargon like "circle back" or "double click," bankers frequently use terms that might sound overly formal or technical to the general public. Examples like "candidly," "accretive," and "conducive" are spot on. These words often reflect the precision and analytical mindset ingrained in the profession.

Other common phrases and words bankers tend to overuse include: - "Let's add some color" (to provide more detail or context). - "Need more thought" (a polite way of saying the idea isn't fully baked). - "Can we beef this up?" (to strengthen or improve something). - "Stet" (used in editing to mean "let it stand"). - "Make sense?" (a frequent check-in for clarity).

This tendency likely stems from the industry's emphasis on clear, concise, and professional communication, as well as the influence of deal-related language. If you're noticing it more now, it's probably because you've been immersed in the culture during recruiting. Signing an EBBB offer is a huge accomplishment—congrats! Maybe take a breather, but rest assured, you're not alone in picking up on these quirks.
