Charlotte Investment Banking
Incoming SA 2027, in Charlotte. I have only visited the town once for my superday and didn't really get the opportunity to check it out. From what I have heard, it seems to be growing aggressively in banking, and the city itself is great for young people, and I am really looking forward to moving here. What are the forum's thoughts, opinions, and advice they have for someone coming next summer?
Incoming analyst (already did SA) in CLT who grew up on Long Island (like 25 miles from Manhattan). I think the city is honestly great for people in your early 20’s. Granted I go to an SEC school so a lot of my friends ended up here post grad but there are great breweries, food, bars, activities, etc. It is by no means NYC and isn’t meant to be, but I think CLT has a lot of appealing aspects.
It gets shit on on this platform bc so many people are NY or bust but it is not that bad. As someone who has lived in both areas, I personally love the change of pace and chiller culture, while still having a good amount of stuff to do. Happy to answer more specific questions but those are my 2 cents
Incoming analyst at CLT but never been to the city - Any recs for apartments and things to do?
Previous comment was me - pm and I can send u a massive list of stuff
You already did WHAT in CLT??
Went to school in North Carolina and yes it is that bad. CLT is a fake city. A giant office park. There is zero culture, spirit, or anything redeeming about it aside from the lower rent relative to a real city. You should be doing everything you possibly can to get to New York if you somehow wind up stuck in CLT.
Not sure if I would say they’re aggressively growing banking there. It’s a couple BB offices and some MM’s. The city is great for younger people—nice bars, breweries, low cost of living. The place can get definitely get boring after a while of being there though.
I don't know if I'd recommend it for new grads. I've spent a ton of time there for work but have never lived there. I have found that the entire downtown shuts off at night, and there's almost no people around. Maybe there are some cool semi-suburb places where people are more active, but I haven't seen them. I was there last month for a meeting and downtown is a total ghost town by ~9pm. I'm there about every 6-8 weeks, and I've never witnessed anything I would call vibrant, but there are some solid restaurants.
I'm sure if you have a big SEC friends network there are probably parties and other stuff I'm unaware of. My cousin moved there in 2005 from NYC and flew back every weekend because he didn't like the social scene. He was from Georgia and knew a ton of people there so it's not like he had zero connections.
Charlotte is ass.
Banking is severely discounted in terms of headhunter looks. Unless you want to eat at the Whole Foods, stop by for local ice cream at Jennie’s, or party one night club that exists, Charlotte is not the move.
I speak from personal experience having lived there for 2 years during my analyst program. If you can get to nyc, I’d prioritize that. It’ll help recruiting and it’ll help your social circle unless you have ties to the south.
Just my take, but understood about the cheap cost of living. Money is temporary, memories are forever.
Can I pm you
Disagree, it depends on what you want to get out of it. If you think it’s NYC , it’s not. It is cheaper than NYC however and is a lot more amenable to suburban lifestyle
What are the most notable groups in CLT? I've heard comp is in line with NYC at a lot of shops, is this true?
Off the top of my head WF, BofA, Jeff, Piper, and maybe HL?
Baird has one too i think
Laz
At my bank CLT is definitely not growing. Seems like the older D/MD people enjoy it but are having trouble attracting junior talent because everybody wants to be in NY.
The only reason I’d go there as a junior is if you care a lot about saving money. NYC clears in every other aspect
If you are young and want to network as much as possible or have the most fun possible, you may be disappointed in charlotte. However, if you have a long-term Gf, are okay with the slower pace of life, or just overall prefer less "stimulus" then it can be great. It is a beautiful city with great suburbs near quail hollow and Ballantyne. I would just think it may be more preferable with a family etc.
Quail hollow is an awesome track and they always host large golf tournaments. I myself went for the PGA championship last year. NC is also an awesome state and much less expensive then nyc so your going to be getting paid more, in theory.
Call me crazy but this is the vibe I want. Being a career banker in the group/industry I’m in is calm. Actively trying to get to CLT from a diff city in the South currently
Not crazy at all! I am on the same wavelength. I grew up in the middle of nowhere in a farm town so just who I am. My goal is to eventually do some mm-umm PE work in Charleston/Charlotte/adjacent low country city and join a nice Country club and golf lol.
CLT is ass as an analyst. Would not recommend and got out of there as soon as I could
Not where you want to stay for more than 1-2 yrs
