CIBC Interview

I just got a first-round interview at CIBC NY for IB. Right now this is looking like my only interview, and I really need to convert this to an offer. Does anybody have insight into what their process looks like, what questions could be asked, and what they like in a candidate?

Absolutely begging for help with this, I unironically will blow my shit smoove off if I don't get an offer.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about preparing for your CIBC NY IB first-round interview:

  1. Interview Process Overview:

    • First-round interviews for investment banking roles typically include a mix of behavioral and technical questions.
    • Behavioral questions aim to assess your fit with the firm's culture and your ability to handle various situations.
    • Technical questions evaluate your understanding of finance concepts, accounting, and valuation techniques.
  2. Behavioral Questions:

    • Prepare a 90-second resume walkthrough that highlights your motivations and transitions between roles or education. Keep it positive and deliberate.
    • Be ready to discuss teamwork experiences, problem-solving scenarios, and leadership examples. For instance, "Talk about a time when you solved a complex problem and how you approached it."
    • Avoid sounding scripted; aim for a conversational tone.
  3. Technical Questions:

    • Brush up on valuation methods (DCF, comparable companies, precedent transactions).
    • Be prepared for accounting basics, such as walking through the three financial statements and how they connect.
    • Stay updated on market trends and have a stock pitch or two ready. RBC, for example, emphasizes market awareness and stock pitches, so CIBC might have similar expectations.
  4. What They Look for in a Candidate:

    • Finance experience: Highlight internships or roles in corporate finance, investment banking, or related fields.
    • Market knowledge: Demonstrate that you’re up to speed with current events and trends in the financial world.
    • Cultural fit: Show enthusiasm for the role and the firm, and be personable during the interview.
  5. Additional Tips:

    • Practice mock interviews with upperclassmen or professionals who’ve gone through the process.
    • Ensure your setup for virtual interviews is professional (e.g., camera at eye level for natural eye contact).
    • Research CIBC’s recent deals or initiatives to show genuine interest in the firm.

Good luck! Nail this interview, and you’ll be one step closer to that offer.

Happening next week or getting scheduled next week? My contact from the team let me know that I'm gonna get an interview but I haven't gotten anything official yet, I don't think anyone has.
