Comp Adjustment with Promotion

So, I know the answer to this already, but just to ensure I am not totally off my rocker... when someone gets a promotion from one level to another, do you typically get that increase in base salary immediately, or do you work your way up to it over a couple years. As an example, if the base salary for a 3rd year VP at your firm is 250k, and then the base salary for an SVP at your firm is $315k, when you get promoted to SVP, do you jump from $250k to $315k at the time of promotion, or do you go to $270k out of the gate and then work your way up...?

High level description of firm experience with the comp structure in your response would be helpful. No names needed obviously. Thanks all, appreciate the help.
