Coping With Offer Decision

I recently decided on joining a firm with two offers in hand. On paper the choice I made was a good one, but now I’m feeling a bit of regret.

Firm 1 had someone pushing for me for a long time and they no longer respond to me (this is the part that sucks the most as I don’t know if I’ve burned a bridge by not choosing them) and they also had the things you were looking for from a good role (culture, experience, etc)

Firm 2 just made better sense on paper and in the moment I felt like it would produce better career outcomes.

I know it’ll pass but for any seniors, how do you make these decisions and move on?

You have to do what's best for you. It sounds like your connection was probably with the less prestigious place and is hurt that you didn't move forward with them.

You can't guarantee that that person will come around, but you can continue making earnest and sincere overtures to get in their good graces.

If the relationship is permanently broken, such is life, but in the interim, prepare yourself for doing your best at the firm you selected. I have reneged on an offer before, and yes, feelings do get hurt, but you have to make the decision that is right for you. Not all commercial relationships and transactions leave everyone with a good taste in their mouths.

Thank you so much for the response! It's good to hear from experienced people about decision-making.

Agreed with above. Many years ago when I was in my final year of undergrad I had to make a tough choice too. Mine was between two different places I had summered at and had emotional ties to both (oof). I debated the merits of the choice for weeks until I finally got over it. I'm an associate now and don't even think about that choice at all lol. You have a long career to explore + love and hate new and old interests + get great at what you do. Don't spend senior year regretting it.
