Corporate Banking?

Hi Monkeys!

I saw an offer for an internship on Corporate Banking and it confused me a bit. I'm not really sure what is corporate banking and I'm looking for some clarification.

Can someone please explain what corporate banking is, and how it differs from investment banking or corporate finance? I'm interested in learning about the specific roles and tasks involved in corporate banking. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

How did you get an internship without knowing wat the role is? I think it can depend on banks, but in general, corporate banking lends money to corporations. So if a company needs a revolving credit facility, a term loan, etc. they will contact a corporate banker. If a company wants to buy another company, they will contact an investment banker. Often times, corporate bankers are used to build a relationship with a corporation so that when the time comes, they will come back to the same bank for investment banking services. For example, let's say JP Morgan lends money to coca cola every year for the past 10 years. Coca Cola now wants to buy Pepsi, so they will go to JPM for advice.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I didn't receive an offer for the internship. I saw a linkedin job offer on "Corporate Banking - Intern".

Thank you for the answer, it was what I needed, much appreciated.

No prob. For future reference, you can also use chatgpt for these simple questions:

Corporate banking refers to the financial services provided by banks to large corporations and institutions. It involves providing banking products and services such as loans, credit facilities, trade finance, cash management, and treasury services to companies with annual revenue typically exceeding $500 million.

Corporate banking is different from investment banking and corporate finance in terms of its focus and target customers. While investment banking deals primarily with raising capital for companies through securities offerings and mergers and acquisitions, and corporate finance is more focused on the financial management of a company, corporate banking is focused on providing financial services and products to large corporations.

In corporate banking, the specific roles and tasks involved may vary depending on the position and level of seniority. However, some common responsibilities include:

  1. Managing relationships with clients: Corporate bankers are responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with corporate clients. This involves understanding the needs of the clients and providing customized financial solutions that meet their specific requirements.

  2. Credit analysis and risk assessment: Corporate bankers assess the creditworthiness of their clients, analyze their financial statements, and evaluate the risks associated with providing financial products and services to them.

  3. Loan and credit management: Corporate bankers manage the loan and credit facilities provided to their clients, ensuring timely disbursement and repayment of loans, and monitoring credit utilization to ensure compliance with credit limits.

  4. Cash management and treasury services: Corporate bankers help their clients manage their cash flows by providing treasury services such as cash pooling, liquidity management, and foreign exchange services.

  5. Sales and marketing: Corporate bankers are responsible for promoting the bank's products and services to potential clients, identifying opportunities for cross-selling, and generating new business.

Overall, a career in corporate banking can be rewarding for those who enjoy building relationships, analyzing financial data, and providing customized solutions to clients. It can also be a challenging and dynamic field, with opportunities for career growth and advancement.
