CS SF TMT vs. Barclays NY

Received offers for both. Barclays NY would have me placed again through the groups, while CS SF is designated TMT. What is the outlook between the two? In terms of prestige and culture? How about location differences?

First off, congrats on those offers!

It seems like the most obvious decision would be how committed you are to tech. If you got the offer for CS TMT, it seems like you either expressed an interest or they thought that you would be a good fit. You could hypothetically play up the offer to get TMT at Barclays, which would then mean that you could potentially get a pretty decent 3-way split between the three in terms of dealflow (remember to not discount the amount of tech in NY). I know that CS TMT in NY actually just calls itself M&T, which would imply that a strong majority of T (tech) is handled by SF.

As far as prestige, it might be impossible to say since you don't know which group you would get at Barclays. TMT is a pretty well-regarded group at CS. I know close to nothing about placement except for the fact that CS TMT would obviously be behind GS TMT/MS Menlo. Not sure how far behind though.

I'd personally choose the SF TMT opportunity.

CS TMT in SF places well on the west coast. It's a great group in my opinion. Pretty sure they did AliBaba if I remember correctly. I know two kids that worked there (I know, small sample, but it's all I have) and they went to SilverLake and Google. Not bad.

Barcap...let's just say I've seen a wider range. This could be partially explained because I have a bigger sample. Their TMT group doesn't stack up to the CS SF TMT one in my opinion if TMT is your thing. If you want to do NatRes, I could see the argument for Barcap.

Regardless, they're both great opportunities and they will both position you for whatever you want to do if you play your cards right. Congrats!
