CVP in London. I’m applying for 2023 Summer. What should I know? New thread.

I’ve been researching CVP for a while now and I must say I’m so freaking heavy on landing an offer with them in London office.

I have many questions but majority of posts on WSO regarding CVP London are 2-3 years old, so let’s start a new one.

I’m particularly curious about these questions (will lay them out one by one for convenience): 1. How does CVP run its recruitment process? Is it through Dartmouth Partners? If so, why I haven’t seen any single official post (neither on portal or website or LinkedIn) from DP on any opening internship opportunities at CVP? 2. I’m joining top European business school this September. There are few folks who got the offers at CVP. Should I reach out to them? Should I ask them to refer me? Would it be too much? I’m still reluctant about networking as it feels so artificial. 3. How many interns CVP accepts per year for summer internship in London? How strict they are with giving out full-time offers? 4. I know CVP runs an exclusive event for selected group of students, how can I get an invitation to it? 5. Does CVP in London also has a signing bonus akin to $50K one in NYC? 6. I’m heavily studying the technicals right now, any particular areas I should be focusing on? Any particular materials that you’d recommend looking into? 7. Anyone with experience at CVP, I would really appreciate your comments and recommendations and I would love to take you out for coffee or a drink (on me) if you are in London this summer!

In my opinion, CTP is very glorified among university students who have no clue about banking. Although the firm is growing presence, known to have a relaxed culture, pay above street, posts like this make me crease.

But to answer your questions:

  • Have interviewed with CTP in their London process. Previously used to be through DP but nowadays its in-house, you apply through email that is only shared on the LSE / LBS / HEC website.
  • If you were asking any of my friends for referral they would probably blackslist you. You don't ask people for referrals, if they like you they would referral either way and they know the purpose of these calls and so forth.
  • Previously they took 2 interns, think they have expanded to 4-5 this year in London.
  • They used to have events pre-covid, I do not believe they have anything like this at the moment. Previously DP used to run this.
  • They tend to be more technically heavy but depends on the candidate background etc.

CVP is indeed glorified by students, but just like any other bulge bracket or 'elite' boutique. Plus, what could you possibly expect from students to know about banking except for the stuff we read from different guides and textbooks? In some sense, it's just a natural phase we are in, so cut us some slack here - I'm sure you had your fair share of silly questions :)

And by the way, thank you for the answers despite the cringe feeling I might have invoked in you!

Edit: yeah, asking for referral smells like desperation, I agree! And good to know that HEC is on the list

Not too sure why CVP is hyped on WSO outside of their NYC offices, nothing compares to GS/MS/JPM in London for those of you doing sellside. EBs are generally weaker in London than their NYC counterparts with ROTH being a  complete exception. Unless we’re talking about Rx/RSSG obsessed students, the only EBs worth considering alongside even mid tier BBs are Roths and Lazard, I guess evercore is rapidly jumping up there too in our end of the pond. Know nothing about PWP’s presence though admittedly.

Unsure why anyone would make a CVP specific thread for london; their recruiting process is extremely rigorous, especially for what they are. If you’re good enough to get CVP london, you probably got something that’s better…

They no longer work with Dartmouth Partners. They open in mid September on their target schools career portals:(Oxbridge/LSE/LBS/HEC/Bocconi)

Prior to COVID they used to take 6 and convert most interns. In 2021 they took 3 interns. This year they are taking 10.

Analyst 1 pay in London is 65k base with a 30k sign on. Bear in mind if you leave before your 3 analyst years end you have to pay the gross amount of the sign on bonus.

The firm maintains a very hardline American culture. They still do training in NYC and they are the only bank in London that drug tests interns and analysts.

The work they do is Strategic Advisory, which involves taking a longer time approach to helping clients. This involve general corporate strategy work, alongside IBD work. They claim the work is 66% IBD and 33% Mangement Consulting. This means they target raw academic talents instead of technical hardos. Overall a great place to work. You often see people lateral from GS/MS to Centerview at the associate level.

Interviews in London are structured in the following way:

Round 1: Partner interview

Round 2: 6 30min interviews with people from across the business

Round 3: Partner interview

Do you need to know people/get people to push your CV if you want to lateral as an associate or do they have a more formalised process compared to at the analyst grad level?

Wow thanks for the detail. Couple follow ups:

1. Do they have a capital markets advisory team//do they help clients with capital raising needs? Or is just pure valuation stuff with a bit of client strategy work?

2. When you say American culture, I'm guessing the hours are crazy? Like finishing post midnight? I had heard that they had a nice WLB.

3. Given the small analyst class, how are bonuses distributed? Will you get a higher amount? What is bonus like and base growth like within the 3 years?

4. Someone mentioned CVP London isnt as good as NY, what is dealflow like? Is it any good?

5. I will probably apply, anything I should mention when asked why CVP? What makes them special? The hybrid of strategy and valuation work seems quite cool tbf.

Thanks in advance!

I'm invited for the first round interview (partner and associate). Can you inform what it's like etc? Thanks

Others have given great info so I’m just going to drop my 2 cents.

This post reeks of the “one firm or bust” mindset that is incredibly unhealthy for you. Just bear in mind. I’m working at CVP now, but going into recruiting, I wanted to go into PJT RSSG or EVR M&A. Obviously those didn’t work out, and what I’m trying to say is that there are soooo many good options out there.

Obviously it’s okay to have a dream firm to work for, but chances are you won’t make it. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay, because it is just so damn competitive. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket bud

Do you know if Centerview London are going to recruit Graduate Analyst in 2023 ?
Do they target only the schools mentioned above or the other top schools are targeted as well ? ( top French business and engineering schools)
