DCM / ECM SA Hours Question
Heading to an NYC BB this summer in one of the IBD financing groups (DCM / ECM) for my SA gig. Curious when interns are expected to hit the office in the morning. Does 7:30 AM still sound a bit too early, or am I playing it too safe? Asking for housing considerations. Thanks guys.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems there's a bit of variation in the hours for DCM and ECM roles, but aiming for an early start is generally a good strategy. For DCM, one comment mentioned that IG DCM groups work 9-5 actually, but this might not fully capture the early morning start that could be expected. Another insight from the context highlighted that capital markets teams, which include both DCM and ECM, don't strictly work 9-5. These teams often work from around 7:30 AM to 11 PM Monday through Thursday, with 12 hours on Friday, and occasional weekend work.
Given this, arriving by 7:30 AM doesn't seem too early, especially considering the unpredictable nature of the workload and the importance of being prepared for the day ahead. It's better to play it safe and be early, as it shows commitment and readiness to tackle the day's tasks. For housing considerations, being closer to the office or having a reliable means of getting to work by 7:30 AM would be wise. This approach not only helps in making a good impression but also in adapting to the demanding schedule of an IBD financing group intern in NYC.

Depends on bank
thanks! any data points on GS/JPM?
Hmm, not sure about GS/JPM, sorry. But from what I know, at my bank the DCM/ECM people are in at around 0730 on Mondays for a market update call, later other days, not at all Fridays. If you're in syndicate, even earlier.
It is always better to be early than to be late, even by a few minutes, because people will notice.
I would reach out to some people on your preferred DCM and ECM desks and ask them what they usually do.
Definitely better WLB in some firms compared to M&A
For reference, Citi ECM Summer Interns were in at 7:30am M - F. They got off earlier than An/As and didn't really work weekends due to HR. I'd expect most banks are similar.
Thanks a ton for the info!
Did a summer in ECM at a BB - my hours were usually 7am to 7pm, little to no weekends
