Deep-Dive into a industry vertical as Freshman?

Freshman in college. Is it smart/advantageous to “deep-dive” into a specific industry Im interested in? From what I can tell, Rx + O&G groups seem to require a depth of industry-specific knowledge and difficult to pick up jargon which also translates into the modeling. This (I surmise) makes it less competitive or easier to break into IB come time for recruiting (PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong.) A few Q’s: 1. As a freshman, would it be beneficial to pick 1-2 industries to study and fully understand the in’s and out’s? Or is studying the fundamentals of Accounting, Excel, Modeling, etc more beneficial? 2. Are there any specific industry groups that would be most advantageous for deep diving into? I have relatively strong connections in O&G and my UG has incredible Health resources at my disposal, so I can make arguments for both O&G and Rx. But my personal interests lean towards Industrials or maybe RE. 3. From an unbiased POV, which coverage vertical would yield the highest marginal benefit in terms of industry prep?

Just a heads up, RX = restructuring, HC = healthcare. Your UG having "incredible Health resources" will not benefit you at all when it comes to RX (restructuring) but it may help if you want to explore healthcare banking.

Probably not the best idea to artificially pigeonhole urself this early and kill your potential. If, for example, you grew up in Houston and all your parents and family members work in the O&G space, then that kind of natural progression/development of interest is acceptable. But you shouldn’t try to synthetically force it. It’ll come off inorganic during interviews cuz u won’t be able to back up y u deep-dived into that industry in the first place.

I had the exact same mentality as a freshman and did the same thing (focused on RX and tech specifically). I'll be heading to a top bank for one of these two industries so I can say that it really paid off so if you have the time to do this, I think this strategy will help a lot during recruiting next year.
