It isn't common, at least with larger banks with organised training programs (as another poster stated, HR are very keen that new joiners bond with these things). You might be able to ask for a deferral for a full year, but especially in this market I'd be hesitant to do that (andseparately, the way HR work is that they forecast their expected Grad intake needs one and two years out, and use that to determine the number of interns to give offers to - so their grad intake needs in a year from now is covered by existing interns. HR don't like it when you mess with this)
