Depression and advice

Hey everyone,

This has been a very supportive community so i just wanted to thank everyone for that. I’m currently slotted to start at an EB this coming summer. Some pretty bad things happened to my family this past year and it’s been a very rough time. Long story short, I’ve been battling depression and itsspiraled out of control into binge eating disorder and ideation. I think I need to spend some time doing therapy and im really not sure that I’d be able to start on time. I was wondering if anyone had any advice- I’ve been thinking about asking if there’d be any way to delay my start date by a year to focus on therapy and spending some more time with family.

First, sorry to hear about the depression you're battling. Can relate.

I'd advise you to not delay your start. A new gig can really help with your mental health with a much needed distraction. Additionally, you don't want to risk rubbing EB the wrong way, even though it shouldn't. In the meantime, spend as much time as you can with your family while developing through therapy and slowly committing to changes in your lifestyle.

I'd place a priority on changing your diet and regularly exercising. Diet and fitness is one of the few things we can truly control, and stability here carries benefits in other aspects of things you're going through.

Agree. I went through a similar phase before and two things have really helped me. The first was to tell myself to just suck it up and deal with it. The second was to impose a self-rule (like how some have self-rules to never cheat never lie) unto myself to simply never feel depressed, to always maintain a zen-like temperament when navigating any predicament.

This phase is making you a stronger and more resolute man. Go grab that EB offer and show the world what you're capable of

Antidepressants are a good quick fix to these issues, but therapy is where you can resolve the underlying causes of your depression. See a psychiatrist and a therapist, you will get better!

Sorry for what you’re going through but stay strong. As somebody who’s gone through tough times and works in finance, what I did was honestly (no disrespect) tell NOBODY about this at work. Not HR, not your boss, nobody. End of the day, it’s none of their business, if there comes a time when it needs to be shared, you cross that bridge then. I had a serious medical issue somewhat used against me but in a way where I was forced to resign and it sucked.

Use the gym or some form of outlet as your therapy outside of work, it’ll help for a way to clear your mind and work on any stress or anxiety or underlying issues. Just focus on you and moving forward, not backwards or looking behind you. You’ve got this :)

Given your context, I think delaying your start date is definitely an option worth considering. I don’t think it would be too difficult, but remember to be assertive & flexible in dealing with this. I’d recommend you give a very brief overview of what’s going on (avoid overexplaining) & ask if it’s possible to delay your start date and/or defer a year. Then say something like “I completely understand if there isn’t really much flexibility in start date & can still definitely start on time if necessary - just want to make sure I’m exploring all options given the current circumstances.”

You’d probably then have to be flexible with how much time you’d get delayed
