Did I screw up?

Got an offer to join a small boutique after being in an ops role at a fintech firm the first 6 months after graduating from a non-target. Having wanted to move into IB I took it since former interns and FT alum of the firm have placed at or moved on to CS/UBS, Carlyle, KKR, Accel-KKR, JPM, MS, EVR, LAZ etc.

However the pay structure and the job are way different than anything I’ve seen on here. My contract is for a 1099 role as a “Capital Markets Analyst” where my base is low but I get paid a bonus on each deal that closes.

Based on my experience so far ~1mo in, the job is nothing like anything I’ve seen or heard. I spend a lot of time on calls with investors/clients, and lead the call about 1/3 of the time. This has been really cool but the inverse is that I have spent 0 time building the CIM/model that we take to market. The firm has a team that does this, but it’s 2 analysts in LatAm and a bunch of interns.

I can’t complain too much because my hours are amazing (40hr weeks) although I am constantly checking my phone for emails and messages.

All this to say that my main worry is that I essentially took a sales job and am not getting the standard IB experience and skill set (in relation to CIM/model building) and will be SOL when I decide to lateral to another bank or PE.

Did I make a bad move or am I overthinking things?
