Difference between a good interview and a "got the offer" interview?
I'm beginning to gear up for SA applications and interviews, and wanted everyone's opinion on something:
What is the difference between a good interview and an interview that gets you the offer? I'm not worried about landing first round interviews, but I want to be fully certain that I can perform to the degree needed to land a good internship.
A friend told me that, if a firm interviews 15 candidates (I'm from the West Coast, so 15 is reasonable), around 10 will be able to get all the technical questions right.
In your opinion, what separates a good candidate from one who actually gets an offer?
Fit. After everyone gets the technicals correct, it comes down to who you/your analysts/associates wouldn't mind sitting next to for obscene amounts of time. If everyone knows their material, its usually who you like more/think would be a good fit or successful at the firm.
honestly, fit is important but more often than not the candidate with the better resume gets the job. it's not that hard to be a good fit for the office, but it is hard to turn down the junior with 2 banking internships and a 3.9 gpa. i've had interviews that went perfectly, but the candidates with better experience got the offer.
Every time I've gotten an offer, I've known it immediately after walking out of the room. It's the ability to nail every question but also connect with the interviewer. When it's no longer an interview, but more of a conversation, that's when you've got it.
