The analyst (third year) who sits next to me is constantly on the edge of going postal. He cusses out associates and VPs, shouts at MDs, kicks his desk, punches his cubicle wall, etc. It seems to me that he's just been constantly abused until he just broke. However, he's still getting his work done, and he's one of our stars. I think he got top tier last year.

This is ridiculous. One pretty smart (I choose my words carefully; that said, he is smart) guy was interviewing with one of the idolized BB's. He got so sick with the idiotic questions, that he pretty much told the cool banker guys to go fly a kite, stood up and went out the door :-)

i am somewhat like that now and i barely just got to my 2nd year. the point is that people like him won't go postal because he has an outlet to express his emotions. which is why he still gets his work done. on some twisted level, this is actually healthy. it is the quiet ones that you have to worry about.

there is a new book out on Banking, called "Bank". and one of the things that it spoke about is "No one dies from this job". i think it is important to keep that in mind.

Yeah, there are reasons why analysts kill themselves. I imagine the poor guy was just taking the only out he saw. It can be very easy to feel trapped in this gig.

noone ever went on a shooting spree right?

There's no crying in banking doesn't hold up too well for some females -- seen it first hand and it doesn't get much better.

I blame society, all thru the kid's life they are being told that they are the best.

Everyone gets trophies. You suck at dodge ball because you are a fatass, schools no longer are allowed to have dodge ball. This education system is built on not hurting the kid's feelings...everyone is a winner, everyone has to respect everyone. Then they get out in the real world, and it hits them like a ton of bricks..."oh noes someone doens't like me."

Then when a boss starts telling them what a fuck up they are, they start crying because they never had an experience when someone didn't sugar coat it.

I agree. Banking should be for those that are emotionally strong as well as smart. There is no point in hiring "academic champions" who comes from a protected environment (could be ivy school or just protective upper class family).

kids need to have Hunger, the urge to challenge everyone and win. in this tough environment there is no room for the faint hearted, you either thrive and move up or you get out.

Its just sad that some people jump off buildings.

I come from a tough part of sydney (gangs, drugs, abuse) and I'm glad cos it made me alot stronger.

...now i'm just hungry to get into IB.

suckermcYou grew up on King's Cross?
KingsX is the nicer part of town, they are just harmless drug addicts, try Cabramatta, thats where the danger is.

but most ib grads come from a privileged environment. i can also think of a heap of directors/mds that fit your description: academic champions (scholarship recepients from all the sandstone unis etc). i don't know if they were protected, but i know they were upper-middle to upper class (wealthy parents etc).

GibbonApsiring monkey, thats harsh Dan rent the movie at your liesure
yes...but there are a number of movies that every guy should have seen at least once...I mean every tv station plays me them like 10 times a year.

Fight club is one of them, i hate to sound cliche but so is scarface, also shawshank redemption there are a whole bunch of them.

I would say:

Lord of War Harold and Kumar go to white castle(sequel is coming out sometime this year) Pulp Fiction Ronin Godfather Boiler room Office Space Space Balls Old School Scarface Shawshank Redemption

probably there are others

i've seen trader's throw their shit against the wall and shit, not that bad....

but, my boy's dad used to work at stratton oakmond, they used to do crazy shit, not a legit job tho, would break bats for confidence in the office, hire whores, throw shit out the window...

Haha. I interned at Rutberg & Company, it's a small investment bank, and there was an MD who is absolutely nuts. He would do the same thing such as break bats, throw stuff out of the window (security use to come up regularly) and dump random liquids on people. It was pretty funny because I knew I was only doing an internship but I can't imagine being there more than one year.

The worst was when he threw someone's wallet out the window and they lost some of their credit cards and money. Or maybe the worst was when he put a hole in the wall. Mind you that clients came in too!
