Do You Get Real Work as a BB Summer Intern?

I know a lot of you have talked about how as a summer intern you were pulling 100 hours.... so the investment banks actually give summer interns real work to do the entire day, as opposed to most companies where you have to go out looking for work?

Wow, finally a good question on this forum. You get "real work" as an intern, but you may spend most of your time doing a first year analyst's bitch work. As a summer, I was assigned a "mentor", a 1st year who acted as another staffer, and I was basically staffed on whatever he was staffed on. So if an MD asked him to make a PIB, most likely I would end up doing it. I spent a lot of time making PIBs, looking for research reports, printing out daily news runs, updating weekly comps, doing profiles, etc. a lot of little stuff that doesn't really relate to a deal, but keeps the group running. That being said, I was also staffed on my own deals, sometimes as the only analyst. So you get good exposure. Just don't expect to be modeling everday. The only modeling I did as a summer was a practice model given to all the interns.

dont know what bank you were at but at a lot of banks you get staffed just like any other analyst, often times on deals with no other analysts

Some banks use programs like BlueBook to make PIBs, but my PIBs were made from scratch, meaning I hand selected news articles and research reports.
