Does DCM Origination actually originate?

I’m referring mostly to the MD’s. What do they do? Aren’t DCM economics dependent on the relationship with the client handled by the coverage teams? Do DCM MD’s go out to non-clients and pitch ideas?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Debt Capital Markets (DCM) MDs do play a role in origination, but it's not in the same way as coverage bankers. Here's a breakdown of their role:

  • Origination: While DCM MDs may not be the primary relationship managers like those in coverage teams, they do participate in the origination process. They work closely with coverage bankers and may join meetings to provide their expertise on debt products and markets.

  • Pitching: DCM MDs can pitch ideas to non-clients, but this is often done in collaboration with the coverage team who maintains the broader client relationship. The DCM team might suggest refinancing opportunities, new issuance, or other debt-related strategies.

  • Client Relationship: The economics of DCM can indeed be dependent on the relationship with the client, which is typically managed by the coverage team. However, DCM MDs contribute to maintaining and strengthening these relationships through their specialized knowledge and advice on debt financing.

  • Collaboration: DCM MDs often work in tandem with coverage bankers to ensure that the client is provided with comprehensive financial solutions. They might not be the face of the client relationship, but they are integral in crafting the debt aspect of a financial strategy.

Regarding the follow-up question about the role of DCM MDs, here is a question that you might be interested in and I can help you with: "How do DCM MDs collaborate with coverage teams in the origination process?"
