Elite Boutique help

Hi guys,

Non-target senior. So I just got done talking to an MD at a elite boutique (Lazard, Greenhill, Evercore, etc) in a non-NY location but...Chicago/SF/LA/Houston. within an industry group.

Had no personal connection with him previously (we shared something in common) and shot him an email. and spoke over the phone, Convo went really well. The dude was pretty impressed saying we do not get as impressive resumes, deal exp, blah blah. He told me to let him know when I will be around the city (i live in a different region) and we can set up an interview.

Do these shops not have a structured interview process for non-targets? Has anyone had to fly out on their own dime for interviews? I really don't mind to a certain extent. But I've been literally flying out to major cities every 2 weeks just to network. So far all of my actual interviews flights were stipend or expensed. Am I getting anally raped by this guy or should I just grow a pair and go?
